Just to cruise around woods and fields, etc. Nothing fast. Dependable and sturdy.
What make and size would you Outdoor guys suggest?

My boy, 9 now, is fine with our 400. Just grata regular full sized bike.

We bought our son one of the chinese throwaways when he was 7. He rode it till it fell apart. He was learning the entire time. We upgraded him to a Honda Recon 250 last year when he turned 10. Thats a darn good bike.

Depends on the size and maturity of the kid.
I went from a Badger 80 to a 400ex. The 400ex was safer. That badger caught hell.

get him a Honda recon and teach him the importance of driving slow and safe.

I just bought a honda recon 250 and i like it. Brand new with electric shift for 3700 at honda of lafayette. Its smaller than the bulky ranchers and has plenty of power. It can go anywhere he will need it to go. Also, if taken care of, itll last for years.

I have seen/heard of too many injuries on big heavy 4 wheelers and young kids. I don't know that I will ever hand the keys of one over to my boys till they are strong enough to manage it

Whatever weight he can push off of him when he flips it over.
At that age, always wear the helmet.

I'm old and have a 250 Recon, and love it.
I can't imagine needing anything bigger if just for riding. And if you get stuck, it's light enough to pretty much pick up and move it over. And it's plenty damn fast enough to mess up a fragile human body.
The age issue is a whole nother can of beans.
My parents let me get a motorcycle when I was 11. I only broke one leg on it.
I live where there are more streets than woods, so I can't imagine letting my daughter own a 4 wheeler. Not saying it's not the "right" thing to do for you though.
I see parents let their kids do all kinda stuff that I wouldn't dream of... maybe I'm just old, and have only one kid and not enough time to make another one.
Best of luck, whatever you decide.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

I had a Honda 70 when I was a kid. Ran the wheels off of that thing.
I would buy a used badger or something, keep it for a few years, then upgrade to a rancher.
He could hurt himself Pretty good with a 250 right now. Give him a couple years and then get him something he can really grow into.

Don't do this. Be a dad and make the right/safe choice for him-he's relying on you. The proper time will come. Your life will be destroyed if he gets hurt on a four wheeler you provided to him at too soon a time.He is NOT ready and it's not even close. This is a no brainer. This is your son/family.

My 7 year old drives my 500. If I was buying one just for him it'd be a 250 or 300 though
