My parents allowed me to have parties with liquor my senior year of HS. This was also 15 years ago and all keys were taken. They never bought it for us though. For the bigger parties, after prom & graduation, a few other parents would come out and supervise. In matter of fact I was suspended the last 3 days of HS because more than half the senior class went to my prom party instead of the booze free casino night.

I have a hard time seeing them doing this now. Kids these days do to many pills.

Exactly, how are all of these "super parents" going to feel when they're kid goes to the hospital because some coke dealer was giving them bathtub meth to make more money? If you love your kids then you're obligated to get to know their friends, their teachers and their dealers intimately.

First, I don't drink that much in the first place, so it's not hard to abstain around the kids.
To me, it's really sad to see a sloppy arse drunk adult around their own children.
Hyporitical? Not really, either. Do you curse around your mother or preacher?

Then you had irresponsible parents.

See, I went to a private Christian school in the deep South and was surrounded by parents who were pounding the table about doing things the morally correct way. A surprising number of those kids ended up alcoholics, addicts, or in a couple of cases, dead.

I hung around with kids who had more permissive parents and for the most part we turned out ok. It depends on the parent and the kids, but there aren't easy answers to these questions and no guarantees that what you're doing will prevent a bad outcome. Sometimes making a thing forbidden makes it that much more enticing.

It wouldn't happen at my house at that age, but you're right in that it will happen. This is why you need to establish a clear understanding that they can call you for a ride no matter the time and you will pick them up no questions asked (assuming there's nothing really terrible going on). Don't let that just be something you say either. Make sure they understand that it is their number one option if they and/or their ride are drunk.

Why didn't we introduce them to a legit dealer?

Sets a terrible standard if it's anything other than a special occasion one drink FROM A BOTTLE BEING SERVED at a family dinner.

I grew up in Avoyelles Parish and drinking at the age of 16 or 17 wasn't really that big of a deal. Of course 18 years old was legal to drink back in those days.

Trashy and against the law last I checked. They'll have their entire lives to get drink and get drunk after 21. Why its so pertinent they start immediately after puberty is beyond me.

I'm going to beg to differ.all of the parents in my group of friends during high school talked to each other, and they were all OK with it under supervised settings. Sure we occasionally snuck around as well, but for the most part we were able to drink without driving anywhere and without fear of getting in trouble. None of us have been to jail, and none of us are alcoholics. We all are professionals with families and homes and children. If it set a terrible standard for us, we didn't get the message.

The most accurate thing that's been said is that it depends on the kid. My oldest didn't really get into the drinking thing. My younger child seems to really enjoy it, and they were raised the same way in a stable, two parent household.

So you're saying that alcoholics shouldn't have a part in raising their kids? So if I have a drinking problem then I should just walk out on the family? Yeah we need more single mothers and fathers in this world, good call.

Supplying alcohol to 15-16y/o on the basis that they are going to do it anyway and you would rather supervise it is about as dumb as it gets. Once you supervision isn't available you still have left the message it is ok to drink at 15 or 16. I know my son will sneak it at some point but the fact he is having to sneak it should control how much he drinks because he knows I'm not allowing it. And when he comes home drunk we will address that situation as needed but with understanding on my part of trying to get the right message across. That being said, drinking while driving has no tolerance.

For those of you that allow drinking by minors based on the fact that they are going to do it anyway then certainly when you are having a get together with them at the house you should allow blowjobs to take place too. Certainly they will have sex eventually so if you allow blowjobs then nobody gets pregnant and you can monitor to make sure they don't get too sexually active and have intercourse. So those of you with daughters who drink would especially benefit from using the same logic with the blowjobs. Keep it supervised and nobody gets pregnant or hurt.

That isn't legal at any age, I checked.
