Would Michigan State be a perennial national title contender?
Absolutely not. Saban can only wins with recruiting and he left Michigan State because he couldn't out recruit Michigan. He only goes to schools where he can have top 3 recruiting year after year.

I think you underestimate Michigan State. They won the Rose Bowl two years ago and beat Stanford and they beat Baylor this year in the Cotton Bowl going 10-2 with their only losses to Oregon on the road and Ohio State--the two teams that met for the national championship game.
I do think Saban could have won a title at Michigan State and had them in contention if you look at the recent collapse of Michigan.

Why is Alabama the one job where he seems to want to stay?
Because that's where he ended up, for lack of a better term. All the other schools, including LSU, were stepping stones to the NFL. When the NFL didn't work out, the timing was right for him to step back down to Alabama. He didn't get what he wanted in the NFL, but he found a place in a major football program that already had a good brand that he can still leave a legacy for himself. Do I wish he'd have had an offer from Texas/USC/ND at the time instead of Bama? Yes. Do I think he's still a slime ball and hope that he never wins another game? Absolutely, but the reasoning why he settled at Bama makes sense.

I really think Saban would have come back here if the job was open in 2007. I know someone who works with LSU PD. He said that Nick was saying he should have never left here when he was coaching for Miami against the Saints at Tiger Stadium. I don't think he wanted to leave LSU per se. He and his wife loved it here. I think he always had itch to coach in the NFL and he had to try it. I wonder if his recommendation of Houston Nutt to replace him was his hope that if he didn't like the NFL, Nutt wouldn't reach the expectations here and he could come back.I wonder if he would have taken the Texas job a few years ago if he was a little younger. By the way, for those that don't know, the Sabans own a part or were part of the development of Perkins Rowe.

Not quite so.
quote:
Nick Saban might never have walked out on the Dolphins to become coach at Alabama in 2007 if not for a series of events that began, oddly enough, with the remodeling of his lake home in Georgia years ago.
The home builder Saban hired was Chuck Moore, whose uncle, Mal Moore, was the Crimson Tide athletic director whose dogged pursuit eventually succeeded — with an assist from Saban’s wife, Terry.
quote:
Mal Moore, who died in 2013, had been under intense pressure to turn around the Tide’s fortunes after firing Mike Shula, son of Don Shula. Moore’s overtures to Steve Spurrier and Rich Rodriguez proved to be dead ends, so Moore zeroed in on Saban, one of the hottest names in football despite mediocrity in Miami. The heat surrounding Moore was of a different nature — he knew his job probably rode in the balance on this hiring, with critics calling him “Malfunction Moore” as he hopped on a flight to South Florida.
quote:
Mal Moore had hope but no appointment to meet with Saban. In fact, for much of this period, Saban refused to take his calls. But Moore quickly hit it off with Terry Saban and was told by Jimmy Sexton, Saban’s agent, that if Saban ever wanted to return to coaching college football, Alabama would be a choice destination.
As Moore and Terry Saban talked at Saban’s home in Fort Lauderdale, Nick Saban met with then-Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga in Davie. There, an apparent decision was reached: Saban wasn’t going anywhere. But when he called Terry and said he still had no desire to meet with Moore, it was Terry who informed her husband that she’d already invited Moore over for dinner that night.
“She made it clear to Moore that Saban was miserable in the NFL and dearly missed coaching in college,” Burke writes. “She also made it clear that she wanted out.”
The next day, when Huizenga checked in with Saban, the tone he heard had changed. That’s when Huizenga told Saban to follow his heart, even though the owner knew Saban’s heart no longer was in Miami.

I don't know how much of his LSU years get covered in this book but it comes out August 4th. There's been plenty of leaks from so far that are all over the internet right now.

How so? You can't imagine your lord & savior crying? It's becoming clear he's very attached to Terry (nothing wrong with that) & he can't make life decisions without her by his side.

He would have not.

You actually believe that he said that? You believe that he would have told an LSU PD dude something THAT personal?
quote:

Open your eyes. He flirted with various NFL teams after his very first year in Baton Rouge. Ever year it was the same old thing;"will he go or won't he?"
quote:
I wonder if his recommendation of Houston Nutt to replace him was his hope that if he didn't like the NFL, Nutt wouldn't reach the expectations here and he could come back.
The recommendation of Houston Nutt was his way of giving the finger to LSU. He knew Nutt would be a failure.
quote:
By the way, for those that don't know, the Sabans own a part or were part of the development of Perkins Rowe.
Perkins Rowe is just one of many investments his financial manager made. It has no more significance than just what looked like a good investment.
You have to get over your man crush. Nick Saban cares about no body other than himself, and his wife of course. He was a professional failure in Miami. His wife hated it there because she wasn't a big celebrity. In a small college town the wife of the head football coach is welcomed into high society with open arms. In a city like Miami she was just the wife of another millionaire and (in Miami terms) not a very big millionaire either. They both wanted out and Alabama pulled the string.
No Dorothy, Nick Saban never would have come back to LSU. So let it go. He was all to eager to get out of Baton Rouge.

We are talking about the late 90s here.

I'm happy Saban left Mich St to come to BR, and he improved a lot of things involving LSU football, but he was not the savior people say he was. Remember UAB - how would that go over now if we lost to W Ky? People forget the losses and remember the NC in '03. I'm very satisfied with our present staff- Saban can go wherever he wants to and I don't care.

I prefer Les to Saban, but that's probably just me.

Lucky for us Saban wasn't blackmailed by Michigan State like the Alabama softball coach was rumored to have been.
