Thank you for helping me prove my point. Saban was never committed to LSU. He was waiting for the perfect (for him) opportunity. As I recall there were strong rumors regarding the Bears and Lions too. Saban wanted total control over everyone from coaches, to scouts, to office personnel, to ball boys. On paper in Miami he got it. What he couldn't control absolutely were the players. They didn't buy into his management style.

We were never arguing Saban's commitment to LSU, but way to move the goalposts. You were stating that Saban intentionally tried to sabotage LSU upon leaving.

wouldn't doubt that Sexton kept some irons in the fire for Saban, but to think Saban had already checked on LSU at least a year in advance is pretty farfetched
How is the 2004 season at least a year from when he left? It's under 6 months.

Miles is not a man you can believe when he talks- I only wish recruts would see this
It fits perfectly. I wish some of you homers would take off the P&G glasses and be a little objective every now and then.
No Saban, no titles in '03 or '07.

So Saban is like everyone else, just a bit shorter, who experiences change in their life?

The tumblers all seemed to fall into place. With the exception of never seeing Dantoni & that Hoosiers guy at the same time.

You stated that Saban quit recruiting because he knew he was leaving by the end of the 2004 season.
Recruiting goes much further back than the first game of the season.

No shite but you get most of your recruits during the season and between the bowl game and signing day.
He accepted the Miami job on Dec. 25th. At that time we had like 11 commits it's common knowledge that Saban didn't recruit as tenaciously as he did when he knew he was coming back.

He couldn't go back. If he hadn't produced a top ten season in 99, he probably would have been fired. It was one of the reasons he left for LSU in the first place.

He truly became a great coach after sports nutrition was invented in 2005.

Saban has always been in the top percentile of coaches. He was respected as one of the best defensive coordinators in football long before he was a head coach. Anyone who doesn't think he's one of the all-time greats in college football is biased.

Just think if he went back.
Would Michigan State be a perennial national title contender
I doubt it. he interviewed with the NFL multiple times while at MSU, but didn't have the juice to get total control but most likely would have eventually gone. His goal at that time was to get to the NFL. Plus tOSU hired sweater vest a year later and Michigan was still a top program and so was PSU more or less. I do remember friends in the media back then saying how he looked like he had extreme culture shock. Not surprising given his back ground.

Would LSU be where it is now if Saban had changed his mind? Who were the second choices?
Would LSU be like it was under Hallman and Dinardo?
I don't recall the 2nd choices but I'm 100% certain it would not have remained like DiNardo and Hallman. Joe Dean was AD in the 90's and he ran the dept on a tight budget and was happy since he was in the black and didnt spend because winning costs more. Emmert realized LSU was leaving money on the table by having a bad football program and knew that while he had to spend more, the revenue would increase even more with a winning FB team. Would we have won 1, let alone 2 National Titles? Who knows. Maybe we'd be like UGA (and Richt may have been considered) usually very good but unable to crack the top at worst, but the 8 losing seasons in 11 years was a product of tight budgeting. That's why we settled for guys like Curley and DiNardo.
Heck Gerry D would prolly have done better and lasted longer if Dean wasn't so stingy. DiNardo crashed with Tepper, the only reasons we had Tepper was because Carl Reese left for Texas and a better contract.
Speaking of Texas, If Dean had been willing to spend in 94, we may have been able to get Mack Brown instead of settling for DiNardo.

I don't think he's saying Miles is better, but Saban left, his replacement was 22-4 when Saban quit the Dolphins to take the Alabama job. sorry, you can't just fire a guy that was 22-4 not matter what you may think of him as a coach even to rehire the guy that may be the best of his generation.

It is easy to look back and say, this guy was always a great coach, because looking back the signs seem more obvious then they are at the time. It is possible for someone to get better over time and I think Saban is no exception. You learn things over time and i think he is better at Alabama then he was even at LSU. He was better at LSU then at MSU etc.

I know he was HC at Toledo before he was DC with the Browns and was DB coach with the Oilers before taking the Toledo job. Was he a DC at MSU before the Oilers?

Alabama told Saban in the year 2004, "if you don't like it in Miami, you have a golden parachute here is Tuscaloosa."

You don't think Jimmy Sexton had been talking to multiple nfl teams throughout our 2004 season?
Saban was looking to bolt to the NFL every year. Miami finally made the offer he had been looking for. His Miami experience made him a better coach. I've had two people on that 2004 LSU team tell me that the locker room was toxic and Saban had lost the team. People assume Nick would have gone on to rack up titles at LSU but I'm not so sure that would have been the case.
