Oh yeah, about this. When I was 16 I was a perfect little angel. Had never touched alcohol or drugs in my life, made good grades, never in trouble, and in fact I didn't even cuss until I was a junior in high school. Eveyr parents dream.
I got a sports car when I turned 16. And while I handled it pretty appropriately for the most part, within 6 months of me driving, I got a ticket for "drag racing" (was bullshite, but I was hella speeding) and had a buddy in the car wiht me (at the time you weren't allowed to have friends in the car). About 9 months later I got anohter speeding ticket.
Now, I'm absolutely damn sure glad I had that car, it was badass. But my point is, that no matter how wonderful you think your kid is, if you give him a sports car, he IS going to speed. He WILL drive fast. Whether he's trying to big time someone next to him, the music is loud and he doesn't even realize it, or he's trying to impress some ladies...it is goign to happen. There is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. Just know that.

Did your son ever frick the neighbor?

2015 Denali XL for the wife.
3rd gen 4Runner for the kid. If you're feeling nice, with the some of the leftover money you can get him the TRD supercharger and beef up the transmission. It will be quick (high 14 second 1/4 mile) without being dangerously fast and pretty much bullet proof, as well as being cheap enough for him to frick up, which is basically inevitable.
ETA: Forgot to add, buy yourself a track car. Sharing it with a new driver is one of the dumber things I've read on here.

Get the wife an X6 and get your son a 964 911. Thinking 70/30 split.

You should just take $50K, put it in a barrel, and burn it. Also call your insurance company and ask them to triple your premium just for fun.

If you're serious (doubtful) get him a FR-S/BRZ.
Sporty, RWD, fun to drive. Very underpowered, but you can actually take a car like that to the limits on a track; which is what I personally would want in a track day fun car. I think I'd have more fun taking a car to the absolute limit of it's ability then to have a 500+ HP machine that I don't have the skill or experience to get the full amount out of the car. I'd rather run out of car, then run out of skill.

If you really cared about the kid, you get him an F16.

You don't tell the insurance company your kid is driving the car dummy
Just don't have any excluded drivers

A 68 anything is a death trap, IMO.
I understand your sentiment, but those old cars will get a young driver killed with the quickness.

He's 15 now, but will be 16 when I buy. I have no real concerns about him driving something "too fast." Wife worries, but I'll monitor him via GPS to ease her concerns. This post was edited on 7/7 at 2:36 pm

Buy him a Tacoma or a new Colorado so he's not a little douche driving a sports car and buy your wife a brand new 4Runner fully loaded. Then the money you saved can go towards some nice ATV that your kid can go out in the mud and get bitches in.

and htf do you think this is going to work? You gonna have an alter on your phone telling you anytime he starts driving somewhere? YOu gonna keep your eyes peeled on the screen his entire trip? Gonna call him up if he goes 10 over the speed limit?
I mean how does you 1984'ing him prevent him from driving too fast in a sports car?
