Is BR traffic really that bad?

Other than the occasional wreck on the bridge, is it really that bad? I have worked in BR and New Orleans, I would take BR traffic any day over New Orleans. Now New Orleans does win on surface street traffic, which BR is terrible with.

nope. BR rarely has traffic. The problem is overblown.

The problem is one wreck shuts down the entire city. If everything is perfect, which is rare, it's not "that bad".

Yes /thread

As someone who has done the same, I couldn't disagree with you more. BR fricking sucks in the infrastructure department.

And that's why NOLA is better.

the BR surface streets are terrible. and everything around LSU is awful which is what a lot of the people on this board have the most experience with.

Ehh, yea I guess this is accurate.

Someone compare it to two other bad traffic situations in the SE: Birmingham 280 and Atlanta generally. I'm sure someone has experience in all 3.

This is from 30 minutes ago. You tell me.

I don't find N.O. area traffic to be bad at all. That little build up on the interstate every morning and afternoon is a joke compared to the shite show around Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge traffic is not that bad, especially if you live in Baton Rouge. It is a little worse for those who want to live in the suburbs and commute to Baton Rouge. But screw them, if they want to have an easier commute they can move to town.

quote:Yes. It's awful when LSU is out and terrible when classes are in session. I leave Hammond at 530 every morning and stay at work late just so I don't have to deal with the shite. I also try to avoid going anywhere at lunch. If I do it's normally within a few miles of the office

What I prefer about Atlanta is you have options...go thru town, go around town any number of ways, etc. Lived there 12 yrs and got good at navigating any time of day. You don't have many options in BR and when you do they're normally both moving at the same pace.

I drive in from Hammond around 500 every morning and leave around 4 every afternoon from Government St. I am usually home in 45 minutes every day, sometimes it is an hour but that includes a stop in Livingston everyday for about 5 minutes. It used to take me an hour and a 15 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes everyday to make it home from the CBD of New Orleans leaving at 3pm.
If I know I am leaving any later I just take North Blvd to Acadian or Choctaw to O'Neal.

27 years in BR, and I'll say Yes it's absolutely MISERABLE until about 7pm. Like someone else said, a wreck on any of the major interstates running through BR causes a HUGE mess that spreads like wildfire throughout the city. It honestly makes me hate this town.

I've lived in both New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and Baton Rouge is about a trillion times worse. Surface streets aren't bad where I live in BR off Government, but if you ever need to get on I-10 (which you often will to get across town) there's a high chance that you're going to sit in traffic. If it's between the hours of 2 and 6 PM, forget it.
New Orleans traffic is hardly ever too bad except for crossing the CCC at certain times.

I have very recently lived in both, and BR traffic is much much much worse. I was going to LSU so maybe I was in bad areas of Baton Rouge, but the whole LSU area from 3-7 during the fall and spring is atrocious.

For a city this size, BR has some pretty terrible traffic. There is not enough connectivity with surface streets which forces everyone to get on a few major streets. Add to that the fact that if anything happens on the interstate and the city is shut down and you've got a recipe for disaster.
BR needs a loop, but we've known that for 50 years.

I'll add that studies have shown that Baton Rouge has the second worst traffic of cities in its size range (the only city worse is Honolulu).
