I don't think we've had this thread before.
Gloria Swanson as the spider lady in Sunset Blvd. is a good one. Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goins in 12 Monkeys is another. I wish I could say "probability" like that.

Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet is probably the most realistic demented villain in cinema history.

Michael Rooker (blue redneck alien in Guardians) was disturbing as hell in Henry. For the harmless-type maybe Jeter or Williams in Fisher King.

Nicholson in the The Shining though that movie pisses me off with the changes from the book. Jack's acting though is great.

Great role, but he wasn't crazy. He acted like he was to get out of jail. If anything, Nurse Rached is the one whose nuts in that film.

As far as really recent ones, Nathan from Ex Machina is right on the line of being completely nuts and brilliant at the same time. Really loved his character.
