In real life, people with those kind of powers would be scary as hell. I think that is one thing that the Batman vs Superman movie got me thinking about. Can you imagine the reaction people would have in real life if some dude could fly around, was indestructible, could shoot heat rays out of his eyes, could hear a pin drop miles away, and could move faster than anything humans could think of? That would be some scary crap right there.
Now I don't know if I'd trust the government to keep tabs on them, but if they didn't, who would? Someone would have to because the risk would just be too great for people with those types of powers to start abusing them.

If Superman wanted to abuse his power, what would the government do to stop him?
Posted on 4/21/15 at 10:29 pm to Brosef Stalin
Exactly. Just because he's registered doesn't mean jack.

The only way to "regulate" people with abilities is to infringe upon their liberty preemptively. So I'd be against it, for basically the same reason i'm against any form of gun control other than cataloguing all gun serial numbers and limiting access for reformed violent offenders.

True, and that's why it would be scary as hell. They would have to try everything they could to figure out a way to take him out. How they could do that, I haven't a clue.
But in real life normal people would be S.O.L if folks had those kinds of powers. It would be way too dangerous to just allow folks like that to just go about as they please, because real life superpowered people would be way too tempted to abuse their powers.
ETA: Magneto's theory on how humans would react to mutants, and his drive to "conquer" humans is probably pretty accurate to what would happen with superpowered people in the real world.

I'd have to be PRO. In the mutant world, wasn't it like only 1% of the people that had powers? That'd be over 2 million in the US alone. So maybe not that many. But those type of powers are dangerous and the mutants/superhuman couldn't just walk around unchecked. There would have to be ways to keep them inline, identify them when they do wrong and capture/punish them. Dare I say..

In the comic world, I'd certainly be against us given that the government in comic books varies between corrupt and incompetent.
In the real world, I'd probably be against straight registration for everyone, due to the violation of their civil liberties. There's no individualized probable cause to invade their reasonable expectation of privacy.
That said, I'm also against vigilante justice. You start fighting crime in the street, you're liable for collateral damage. All that property damage? That's on you. You kill someone? You go to jail. You're not the legal system.

Thought exercises like this lead me to conclude that people dont REALLY believe in God. Not like they believe in bears or spruce trees anyway. I mean, God can do all that stuff multiplied by a billion and unlike superman is omnipotent and omnipresent and people wake up and go about their business like it was nothing. So either they dont really believe OR the existence of superheroes wouldnt cause that much of a disturbance as one would think.

Sounds familiar.

Difference is Gods intentions or his virtue is not in question ever, by definition.

I swear to Thanos, if y'all turn this into a religion thread, I'll destroy you both.

Historically and admittedly by him, his virtue is relative and leads to his intentions to be to crush people into smithereens.
Not trying to turn this into a religion thread. Just illustrating that we dont need to speak in hypotheticals. We have that scenario already.

More government regulation? You some kinda goddamn communist?

Anti-Reg because any government would just screw it up. Also the superheroes would have the right to remain private as long as they are not public figures.

I cannot think of a comic book arc where heroes working under the governments control turned out well.
Look at what happened with Superman worked for the U.S.
Look at what happened when Superman worked for Russia.

God is not human, so the scenario does not already exist. His attributes are far from human.
To believers God is just, righteous, and without sin; man is not. But even with that said, true believers do fear Him (or at least should fear him).
But we don't need to turn this into a religious argument on this board.
