Looking for something other than the normal beach trip to take the wife and 3 kids on.
Has to be fairly inexpensive and no more than a 10-12 hour drive from Hammond.
Whatcha got?

North Georgia (or Alabama) or southern Tennessee area, rent a cabin...Get a guided flyfishing trip for the family, hike, go to the base of area rock climbing spots and check out the cliffs, play games, cook...

Arkansas mountains or Texas, that's about it.

San Antone, Austin, TX Hill Country. See the Alamo, go to Schliterbein, Get your picture taken at the SRV statue.
Or you can expand your range another half day and go to Taos. That's what I would do.

Smokies. Plenty to see/do if you like outdoor activities.

Smoky's are too far. Kids would have a blast in Chattanooga. Plenty to do there - Aquarium, Rock City, Incline Railway, glass bottom boats through the cav, etc. You could also make a trip from there to the Smoky's if possible.

Get another family to pitch in and rent a luxury house for a week near Disneyworld. Houses all have private screened pools and can sleep up to 20. Depending on season, about $1500. Eat meals in and spend the money for one day at Disney and one day at Universal.
