I know that I want a 50mm objective, but I'm trying to decide on magnification. I will be putting this on my new X-bolt 30-06 and hunting deer primarily 50-200 yds with an occasional 300 yd shot. My first hunch was to just get the 4x-16x or 4.5x-14x. Now I'm second guessing whether I need that much magnification. Would a 2.5x-10x or a 3.5x-10x be more than enough or should I just spend the extra $150 for the extra magnification?

3x9 is all you need. Good irons are good out well past 300 yards.

Leupold. Don't need that much magnification.

I would get the 4.5-14x50 Leupold. If you can get it with the CDS then you will love it.

Leupold between those two, no question.

The Meopta Meopro is also in this price range, fwiw.

I've always had 2x7's and 3x9's. A few years ago I decided I needed a 4x12.

It stays on 6x power 99% of the time.(Well within the range of the other scopes I have)

I say go with the bigger magnification. I'd rather have it and not need than need and not have. Most of my scopes are a minimum of 12 power but I normally shoot at 10 power, it's just nice to zoom in on antlers every once in a while.

Harder to find the animal if it's a quick get up and on him shot. Like if a buck trotted across a pipeline and you only had 6 seconds to get on him and squeeze the trigger.

I use a 3-9 and shoot out to about 250 no problem. I usually leave it around 4x in the stand then crank it to 9x when I am going to take a shot or looking at a rack

Parallax, less light transmission, and field of view. If you get over about 10x-12x zoom, depending on scope, you are going to want to make sure it has parallax adjustment-and preferably side focus. The more zoom, the smaller the exit pupil, and the less light transmitted to your eye. Obviously, field of view will be smaller.

I've been looking at the 4-16x42 Monarch 3 for a .338 mag (haven't decided which one), and for the price it's hard to beat (about $400.00 +/- on Gunbroker).

Seriously-you probably don't need anything more than 3-9x40 on a 30-06. But as with my thread on elk calibers-everyone has their reasons for wanting their certain this or that, so have at it.

Have you looked at the Vortex scopes? I just put a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 with the BDC. Excellent scope, plus they have a lifetime warranty on them. Compared to my Nikon, I would pick the Vortex all day..!

Ya know, they've been recommended to me by several people. I'm going to do a little more research on them and seriously consider them

Of those two brands and models I would pick Leupold every time. Would definitely research the other brands mentioned too.

For the power, I have a 14x Ziess, which is overkill. I'm not a competition marksman and haven't shot 500yd targets at 6x power, maybe that means I need to practice more but to me 12x is a good compromise.
