on triple D just now, guy went to a place in Alabama called the gumbo shack.
this idiot "chef" just dumped in all his spices, veggies, and meats then chicken stock, then a bunch of flour and called this entire concoction his "roux."
once he cooked it all for a few hours, he dumped a shite ton of whole tomatoes and okra and called it gumbo. I cringed the entire time.
please tell me no one actually does this

Pretty certain most of the places DDD goes to are highly successful. I'm sure that "idiot chef" knows more than you about cooking.

Would you also like to discuss the best hamburgers? Or how about beans and ground meat in chili? No? Well, what about Walk-Ons? Mdawg? Chains in BR? Come on. We can pile a whole bunch of FDB threads that have been beat to death.

being successful in some shite Alabama town doesn't mean you know anything about the food.
dumping all that shite in together and calling it a roux is idiotic. roux is flour and fat, not 90% of your ingredients mixed together at the exact same time.

How many cups does that convert to?

I throw a can of Rotel in occasionally.

The key word is Alabama.
In 2007 I was tailgating with some Alabama friends at BDS, one of the guys had made a pot of seafood gumbo. It looked great, full of shrimp, crabmeat, oysters, a dark roux. I complimented the chef and he handed me a big bowl, nothing. No seasoning at all, a mild saltiness and the taste of the roux and seafood.
Those poor shrimp gave up their lives for nothing.

Pretty everyone outside of LA thinks gumbo is a tomato and okra soup. Drives me crazy.

No one outside of Alabama does this.

The food on the other hand is anything but ugly. I had the crawfish gumbo and it was delicious, I would have preferred a piece of French bread with it, but it was damn good gumbo. Here you can alter your gumbo by putting crawfish, shrimp, or oysters in it, which also sounds like a great alternative.

Yeah its about as divey as a diner can get, but this shack makes the best damn gumbo that has ever been on this girl's lips yet!

This place certainly meets the criteria for a dive but the gumbo is world class and worthy of the recognition from Triple D.
Lol, dude.

To each his own but that sounds like a tomoto gravy with okra

That episode nearly gave me a heart attack the time I saw it. He can make it and call it whatever he wants except gumbo because gumbo it is not.
Do those people you quoted live in Bama where gumbo is tomato based soup with no roux?
You forgot a few.

This is NOT creole gumbo. Let me explain first of all I am from south Louisiana and have had the opportunity to taste many award winning true gumbos. If you like tomato soup with okra and sausage then you might enjoy the gumbo shack. Their gumbo is made with a tomato base instead of the roux that in a creole or cajun gumbo. The gumbo shack does this for their red beans and rice also. This is the worst gumbo I have ever tasted. Will not be back.

Gumbo was not very good. We were really looking forward to it. Service was friendly but portions were small.

The Gumbo Shack was a big disappointment. The gumbo is not good and the service is very slow. Go somewhere else in Fairhope!

No idea where they live.
You think Guy knows what good food is?
And you forgot another.

I had the Naked Gumbo with shrimp and was supprised it was tomato based, not roux. I have had a lot of gumbo and this was as good or better than any I have had.
