What's the single most important thing in cooking besides fire.

I say the chicken. Lots of uses for a chicken. Then there is the whole egg deal which vaults the the chicken ahead of other proteins. Of course an argument for grain could be made as it gives us our breads and cereals and noodles and such while also feeding the above chickens and most all of the other land lubbing animals we eat. But still I'd probably pick the chicken as the most useful food type thing.

Taste. The cook has to have good taste.

I dunno. From a cow you can get milk, (therefore cheese and butter) and beef.

Dammit Otis, we're talking about things here not senses. Pots, cows, refrigerators, aluminum and 18-wheelers.
Not that taste is not important. That's why I have so much of it.

It's a tie between ketchup, a microwave, and Italian dressing

I'd go with salt. Crucial for preservation prior to refrigeration.

I was slow to post, but I didn't see your cow post before I submitted mine!

I'm going with the pig.
Bacon, ham, porkchops, ribs, bacon, ground pork, pork sausage, bacon, pork shoulder, and bacon.

The mirepoix, the fragrant seasoning chopped and sauteed with butter, lard or olive oil. The aromatics that give your dish flavor.

Corn should be on list. So many uses including feeding your cow and swine.
