How to Fix the Pels: Wait (Grantland Shootaround)

How to Fix the Pelicans
New Orleans Pelicans v Dallas Mavericks
Andrew Sharp: The Pelicans were up four on the Mavs near the end of the third quarter when I stopped and thought to myself, They are definitely losing this game. It’s hard to explain why. Maybe it’s because Rick Carlisle is neck-and-neck with Pop as the best coach in basketball, and Monty Williams is … not. Maybe it’s because Monta and Dirk are great all game, but they both get a little more impossible in the fourth quarter. Maybe it’s because the Pelicans are still learning how to win, and losing a bunch of winnable games is just part of the process. I don’t know; I just knew it would end exactly the way it did.
Everyone knew. Right? While the whole world tunes in to watch Anthony Davis this year, there will be lots of nights like this. We should all accept it. Have you seen the rest of the West?
That doesn’t even include OKC.
The Pelicans aren’t making the playoffs.
And that’s OK. We can still enjoy nightly Browgasms, we can still enjoy Tyreke Evans hurling himself at the rim, we can still … well actually, I don’t even know if Eric Gordon still plays in the NBA. But the Pelicans will be fun, win or lose. Just try not to read too much into it when things don’t work.
It’s Year 3 for Brow — in Year 3 of Kevin Durant, the Thunder were the 8-seed. If the Pelicans finish one or two spots lower than that in the MurderWest of 2014, that’s about where you’d expect them. Most younger, sloppier teams have had the benefit of easing into the playoffs on the strength of talent alone, but the West is full of killers right now. Older, smarter, and more clinical on both ends of the floor. Watching the Pelicans try to close against the Mavs is like watching a bear cub face off with a pack of wolves.
I’m writing this just because I can feel the “How do you fix the Pelicans?” articles coming, and there’s one simple answer:
Wait.
And maybe fire Monty Williams, and definitely get rid of Gordon, and hopefully find a 3-and-D James Posey clone in the draft or free agency.
But mostly, just wait. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Take a second and imagine this same Pelicans team playing this same Mavericks team two years from now. The Mavs * won’t have a chance.

Fire Monty. Let Gordon come off the books via the stretch provision if necessary. Ryno and Reke are assets. No need to jump the gun and trade them. I think that we could possibly sneak into the playoffs as the 8 seed, and I don't want to pull against that, but if it meant more Monty, then maybe missing the playoffs is best.
Team Karl.

I do agree that we shouldn't see any moves made out of panic, but I think the only people you wait with are AD, Jrue, Asik and Ryno. Everyone else is fair game in moves to try and improve this year.

Agreed, wait.
I'd trade a 1st rounder for Jeff Green though

Overall sad but true... the west is stacked against us.
No way around it.

This made me LOL. I was so excited when we got him.

I don't really get all the bitching about the East. Over half the teams make the playoffs. Thats as much as the NFL used to allow out of 30. Even if every single good team was in the West, a good team should still make the playoffs.
The stacked West is cancelled out by basketballs ridiculous playoff system. All you have to be is in the top third of teams.

andrew sharp is neck and neck with zach lowe for my favorite sportswriter today.
read all of his stuff on grantland...he consistently shows a perspective that the "hot-takers" ignore, and when he satirizes those same hot takes, it's spot on

My question is... if AD is MVP-caliber THIS year, then why does his age or number of years in the league matter?
If they are having trouble winning with an MVP-caliber player right now, then I'm not sure much will change in the future.

40% of the salary cap is dedicated to 2 players currently projected to produce a combined 1.9 win shares. LINK / For comparison purposes Austin Rivers is projecting at 1.4 WS and Alexis Ajinca at 2.9. The production we're getting out of Tyreke and Gordon's salary slots is what will change in the future.

So who are the ideal players to play on the wing in this group with Jrue and AD and Asik as core players?
Are we talking Danny Green (expiring, right?)? Wilson Chandler? Jeff Green? Gerald Green? Any other greens out there? Draymond?
I'm trying to think semi realistically here (take out Draymond...that's a Green joke).

Hopefully finding guards that can shoot will help. Maybe some NBA caliber players on the bench?

Yes. I don't think Jimmy Butler or Kawhi are in the realm of possibility. I do think Draymond is possible depending on how much the cap/tax increases. If the Warriors keep Speights and don't dump Iggy/Lee they'll be around $80 million not counting Green. Sure we'd pay $10 million to get him, would the Warriors pay $20 million to keep him? That's what the tax effectively does.
Unless we do some sort of trade I think Gerald Green is who we end up with. He's the most available for the $8-$10 million we'd have after stretching Gordon.

I'd be happy with Gerald Green.

When it comes to flexing, are you advocating actually pulling the trigger on it or do you just think it's what's going to happen?
I worry about Demps saddling us with literal dead weight if he's on his way out the door and choosing our next long term piece. The ideal situation is riding out Gordon's last year to me.
Unless, of course, we have a new coach. Then, swing away.
