Is there anything more pretentious than a doctor correcting someone by saying "Doctor" after someone calls them "Mr." or "Ms."?

Unless it is a medical doctor, but even then, it's still pretty douchey.

But when someone is being a dick, it is one of the best ways to piss them off.

Pretentious here. It's a big deal in Europe, though.

You wouldn't understand. You don't hold a doctorate.

I've observed this a couple times in different work situations or at conferences. I avoid those people from that point on. i would never do that to someone.

There was a patient at the hospital who was very offended when she was called Ms instead of Dr.
She even went so far as to called out the Md treating her and everything. Turned out she had a Phd in sociology.....

Anyone who puts in an extra 8 years after college deserves to be called Doctor. At least the medical variety.

I have a teacher I work with that our principal had to basically put in her place because she was giving her kids extra homework if they forgot to address her as "Dr. _____" after she got her doctorate.

In a fricking middle school.

ETA: That's the only time I've seen anyone take it that seriously though.

I would never do that. For the most part I don't tell people I have a PhD unless it's necessary. 9/10 people I meet would never know I have one.

However, when picking up chicks I tell them "you can trust me I'm a doctor" or "im a doctor, I know these things" and last but not least "wanna check out my TARDIS?".

Especially if they're not even medical doctors. Our music director at church - who used to be (still is?) a chiropractor - insists on being called Dr. _____. Such a douche.
