This kind of situation is exactly why we need armed teachers. Teacher should simply pull his own firearm out, put a bead on the student and continue the lesson as if nothing were amiss. If the student reaches for the weapon then put him down, otherwise nothing to worry about.

Let's say you saw it, didn't do anything because you felt bad, then he shoots another student or it discharges accidentally killing a classmate. You're fricked.

I hope it's hypothetical.

You want to be that "cool teacher" that lets their kids come to class strapped given they have a good enough excuse.

This is not a question of ethics. Common sense rules and you have to follow protocol.

I can't take the chance with other students' lives. I would alert the principal immediately, and let her make the decision on what should be done. I'm not dealing with a kid who has a gun ... even a "good" kid.

And what happens when that student shoots someone?

Technically, no one knows the teacher saw it.

And, despite what people have been conditioned to believe reflexively, there is an infinitesimal chance he's going to use it.

Give the kid a break.

if black, notify authorities immeadiately
If white, let him slide. He's just a good ole baw going thru difficult times.

That's an absolutely absurd idea.

Probably 70% of the people I work with I wouldn't want anywhere near a gun.

Teachers need free mental health care, not guns.

It was just water cooler talk this morning. We did have a student go through this situation, but the school went on lockdown day of (school was a few miles from shooting). We don't suspect he has a firearm, but we all thought "what if".

Again, as you said, I would never put the other kids at risk, but I also would feel terrible for him, because that's jail time and an expulsion and that is just more to his plate.

Why not both? And maybe some badass night-vision as well. There's no reason our educators should have less training or equipment than a SWAT team member. Think of the children.

If something happens later and they find out you knew, it's your arse on the chopping block.

With that in mind, it's your judgement call.

Ask yourself this.Do you,as a Teacher, want to put your career in jeopardy for this Student.

If you want to remain a Teacher you get the student out of the classroom and turn the matter over to your boss, which I assume is the Principal.
