That is simply false.
They were the 2 seed and absolutely considered contenders that year. They were on the cover of sports illustrated during the playoffs.
The 09 Rockets were the 5 seed and went just as far as the Hornets did...the 2nd round and a 7 game series.
Try to be intellectually honest for once in your troll life.

Fringe playoff team. Could be dangerous in a year or two if they add some additional pieces

Surviving the west will be tough with a thin roster. But if they get into the playoffs, the top 6 gives them the talent to pull off an upset.
They still don't know who they are as a team

There were 5 clear contenders that year, the Cavs, Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, and Hornets. Hornets may have been the bottom of that tier, but they were definitely in the tier.
Neck and neck with Lakers in regular season, went 7 with SA. Hard to say how we matched up Bos and Cle but they absolutely could've won the west that year with a couple of breaks. And making the finals certainly means you're a contender

They were the 2 seed who finished 1 game ahead of the 6 seed. I'll concede that they were contenders if all of the team that finished within 1 game of them in the season were. Of course that makes Houston and Phoenix contenders too which def won't fit your narrative even though PHO was hands down the preseason pick to win the West that year.

People can bash the bench all they want. If we stay healthy, there is 0% chance we miss the playoffs.
When the 2nd unit is on the floor, the worse team in the league can score on them at will (see the Lakers game for a case in point). Look at what happened last night in the 2nd quarter and in the 4th. Monty was shitting on himself wondering if he had pulled the starters too early; a 20 point lead went to 9 in less than 2 minutes. They weren't even smart enough to run time off the clock.
The Pelican bench may well be the worse in the entire league.
The first unit can't carry to whole load...even if the guys stay healthy.

People like to act like we were going in punching people and flagrant fouling with West/Tyson. Just wait til someone cheap shots AD. I'm pretty sure that the "toughness" you are looking for will show up. I don't know if you could name one team in the NBA that wins games by beating the crap out of people other than "maybe" Memphis.
I don't mean guys that will fight. But you need dirty guys that throw the other team off their game and that cheat or really stretch the rules. OKC's teams the past couple of years were full of those guys. Perkins, Adams, Sefalosha, Fisher, Collison and even Ibaka. Those guys all scrap and are super physical (and yes dirty). Maybe Asik has a bit of a that in him and I like what I see from Rivers (that's why he is getting better). We need a couple of more to come through like that. A great candidate would be Miller. If he could embrace a tough guy role, he could write his own ticket here.

a solid all star level PF

a guy that was probably the best defensive player in the league

one of the best 3pt shooters/closers in the league.
We have jrue/Tyreke/AD for closers.

We have some very similar players and situations but we are not as clearly defined. That team had balance and everyone knew where they fit.
That's playing time and you can tell they're slowly but surely figuring it out.

I think the bench deal is totally overrated.
Not really but I can see your point.
quote:
Second we do not have a strong number 2 player.
Tyreke hasn't been perfect but he's well on his way to this. He's averaging 17/6/7 and his outside shot has been so much better. He's been arguably the most consistent player outside of AD(and maybe Jrue/Asik).
quote:
Third we are not tough enough (not a dirty/mean player in the bunch)
So?

Lastly we have too many 3rd level guys that they are chocking each other out, so that none of them can really shine.
This has been a lie so far.
quote:
Evans, Holiday and Gordon can all be good players. But their roles/minutes/positions change almost every game.
Jrue/Tyreke's roles haven't changed much if at all from game to game. Gordons been awful on offense but that's for another time.

It's hard to get in the groove that way.
Only gordon agrees with this

I don't think any of the three can play to the fullest capability with one of the others.
Tyreke/Jrue disagree

I think 2 of the 3 should go. It's addition by subtraction. But they aren't going anywhere of consequence until they figure the backcourt out.
2 of them Tyreke/jrue aren't going anywhere. They're playing very well,Gordon has been awful outside of defense.

I have to say that the ball movement last night was the best I've seen in years. Evans is gaining confidence with every passing minute (no pun intended) and he's damn near unstoppable when he decides to rip the lane (reminds of what EG did years ago).
I think the other players are realizing that AD can cover up a lot of mistakes and they're starting to play loose ball...that's the 1st step to winning big games.

If they stay healthy, they can definitely pull off a season like last year when the Blazers defeated the Rockets in the playoffs. Rotations are only 7 or 8 deep come playoff time. That Blazers team had a dogshit bench (with amazingly lucky health for the starters). They still won their first series because, due to their youth, their starters weren't completely worn down come playoff time despite playing a ton of minutes in the regular season.
I'd agree that a first round exit is a reasonable prediction, though.

If we stay healthy, we will be in the playoffs. AD is one of the best players in the world. Enough said.
Jrue is steady, makes buckets, dishes out assists, and gives us solid perimeter defense.
Tyreke can take it to the hole on anyone. Last year, he had difficulty finishing in the beginning, but he started draining layups as the season progressed. He has an improved 3-pt shot, which is encouraging. He had some beautiful dishes to AD in the paint against the Lakers.
Nobody anticipated the improvement that Austin Rivers has shown. He is now a player that opposing teams have to account for and respect.
I still believe that Eric Gordon will find a role, and heat up as the season progresses.
The best case scenereo is happening with Asik. I.e. He's a defensive force who pulls down rebounds on that end of the floor, which is what we were lacking last year.
Ryan Anderson has shown that he is fully recovered, and is draining threes.
I really like this team.

There is talent on this team and a lot of things to like. If the chemistry develops, and the Lakers game shows that it is, the Pelicans have a real chance to make some noise.
As everyone knows, the front-line guys staying healthy will tell the whole story.
Here is what I don't like: Luke Babbitt. The guy does not belong on the floor; he is a foul making turnover machine.

The ceiling for the core of this team, projected over 2-3 years, is REALLY high. Make the right moves, retain the right players around AD, and you're winning playoff series and making runs for the West. As for this year, a shallow bench sets the ceiling lower. Pels cannot afford much in the way of injuries but after being decimated last year, perhaps we get a relatively injury-free year. We also have Gordon problem. I think he can and will shoot beter than he has but he may just be a diminished player after all of the injuries and he is soaking big minutes at the 2 spot.
My admittedly optimistic goals for this year: 48 wins and win a playoff series.

If the West (especially our own division) weren't so stacked I'd be more confident of a playoff berth.
You'd think the following are close to playoff locks:
Spurs
Clippers
Warriors
Grizzlies
Rockets
Blazers
Dallas
That leaves one spot for Pels/Thunder/Suns. I don't buy into the Suns yet, and it depends on Westbrook and Durant. I think we can be as good as Portland/Dallas and we match up pretty well with Houston, but I don't know if our second and third options are elite enough yet. It really all depends on how Jrue and Tyreke play all season and if we stay healthy, because AD is the best or second best player in the league right now.
