How good can the pelicans really be? I am a huge fan but honestly don't know much about basketball. We all know that AD is special. But with the talent on this roster how far can they go?

1st round exit. Bench not deep enough.

This team definitely has the talent to go far. However, our bench is a bit lacking and we don't always play the best defense when we need to. We are a great 3rd quarter team, but that doesn't mean anything if we cannot close out the game in the 4th quarter. We should have easily won against the Cavs, but our defense let up and then they won by 7.

If we play absolutely out of our minds and avoid injuries we could get about a 6 seed

Then with a huge amount of luck and getting hot at the right time maybe get to the second round

That's about the absolute maximum to expect

More than likely we have a bad injury or two and barely miss the playoffs. That's what I'm expecting anyway.

with the current roster I believe we could sneak into the playoffs as a 7th or 8th seed. we are not deep enough to make it out of the first round though. making the playoffs this season though would be a huge step in the right direction and put this franchise in a good place moving forward

When this team is hitting on all cylinders, meaning AD has a normal night, tyreke only blows 5 lay ups, Gordon scores at least 10, Jrue has 10+ assists, Ryno is hot, and Austin Rivers has more assists than turnovers, I believe they can run with the best of em. But to extrapolate that over 7 games seems a little too idealistic at this point. Playoffs? Sure. But this team doesn't have the bench depth to make a serious run. We are about 2 players (a scorer and a 3+D SF) away from being a nightmare matchup.

The Pelicans are going to be competitive and beat some of the top tier teams. I don't know if they are good enough to make the playoffs in the west though. ^ players are good but after that it's a pretty weak bench. I said before the year that they could be similar to Portland last year, but what they were able to do was pretty remarkable. I think this team could contend in the East.

This team's ceiling, imo is about 50 wins.

They'll do what Portland did at best, play spoiler and sneak out of the 1st round only to lose in the 2nd round.

No bench depth at all, but a very solid 6 (5 1/2 to be exact since EG is only contributing on defense right now).

Jim Mora says they are a Playoff team. In fact he said it twice. Playoffs! Playoffs!

could be top 5 to 10 if everyone is healthy dependent upon how they mature as a team and develop depth.

Agree with this.

We have to hope that the FO makes good personnel decisions once EG and his contract are gone. The bench is weak because of the mistakes made (using over 40% of the cap on the 1 and 2 position)and the lopsided performance vs. salary from EG. If Demps, or his successor, can't make better decisions, AD can only take this team so far (maybe 1st round and out).

Honestly, when we sneak into the playoffs I guarantee that we are the last team someone wants to see that early. The top tier talent level is deep, and Anthony Davis is someone that's capable of taking over a playoff series.

People can bash the bench all they want. If we stay healthy, there is 0% chance we miss the playoffs. People forget the absolute garbage we trotted out from the CP3 era. Sean Marks, Devin Brown, Ryan Bowen, Bobby Jackson, Julian Wright, and those are just people in the top 8-10 MP.

They have to start beating some good teams, but them taking care of the garbage teams is a very promising sign. Strap on, enjoy the ride.

Here's that 07-08 championship caliber team and that buzzsaw that was their bench.

07-08 MPG

ETA: Forgot the part that will be the biggest reason we won't go anywhere in the playoffs, even if we lucked into a 1st round upset. Monty Williams. The prospects of him coaching vs any Western playoff team over 7 games is frightening.

I think best case scenario is about 50 wins, and a a 7-8, maybe 6 seed if we're lucky. And it depends on who we play, but we might be a 1st round exit, maybe win one series. If that happens though, I would consider it a successful season. We would be a lot better if Gordon played better, and if we had a better bench.

I think they make the playoffs if AD plays 75+ games. I really do. The coaching is the main thing holding them back. AD is definitely closer to LBJ and KD than he is to the pack right now. He's just too good for his team to not be top 10 if they aren't tanking.

Can anyone think of parallels of players that good not making the playoffs? KG was good but I think its flat out wrong to say he was as good as AD is now. Plus, our team is really poorly made but has decent starting talent.

You are totally passing over how good that team was at the top. You are talking about a top 5 player in the league, a solid all star level PF, a guy that was probably the best defensive player in the league and then one of the best 3pt shooters/closers in the league. We have some very similar players and situations but we are not as clearly defined. That team had balance and everyone knew where they fit.

I think the bench deal is totally overrated. The problems we have is first our superstar is still learning and growing (he'll figure all that out in time). Second we do not have a strong number 2 player. Third we are not tough enough (not a dirty/mean player in the bunch). Lastly we have too many 3rd level guys that they are chocking each other out, so that none of them can really shine.

Evans, Holiday and Gordon can all be good players. But their roles/minutes/positions change almost every game. It's hard to get in the groove that way. Plus their styles clash with one another. I don't think any of the three can play to the fullest capability with one of the others. I think 2 of the 3 should go. It's addition by subtraction. But they aren't going anywhere of consequence until they figure the backcourt out.

Massively oversold, he was a nice spacer, but we have multiple players on this team that grade out better.

Third we are not tough enough

People like to act like we were going in punching people and flagrant fouling with West/Tyson. Just wait til someone cheap shots AD. I'm pretty sure that the "toughness" you are looking for will show up. I don't know if you could name one team in the NBA that wins games by beating the crap out of people other than "maybe" Memphis.

front line guys MAY be able to squeak out a series, but no way they get through the second round. This team needs bench, and a serviceable 3 and we can run with anyone in the league.

we are really close guys!
