Are Baton Rouge Firefighters Underpaid?

quote:LINK So a 20 year veteran of the BRFD is expected to work 1,432 hours per year after allowances for leave and holidays, and he is paid $53,000. That is $37.01 per hour. The average 20 year veteran in a peer city is expected to work 1,721 hours per year for $57,577. That is $33.46 per hour.
The study shows a firefighter in his 20th year of service in Baton Rouge could earn about $53,000 in total compensation, which combines base pay, longevity pay and other allowances. On the other hand, the average total compensation for 20-year firefighters in the peer cities included in the study is $57,577.
However, 20-year Baton Rouge firefighters have 360 hours of leave, whereas similar firefighters in the peer cities have 254 leave hours on average. A 20-year Baton Rouge firefighter also would have around 288 holiday hours, as opposed to an average of 105 holiday hours for firefighters in the peer cities.
Baton Rouge pays its firefighters over 10% more on an expected hours of work basis than the peer cities it was compared to. The article ignores the value of retirement benefits, other than referencing that retirement is paid for by a dedicated property tax millage. The value of those contributions should be included in total compensation. As such, I do not have much sympathy for the firefighters' demands for a 6% pay increase.

That is more than most teachers make.

That's 81 days off per year or 4 weeks per quarter.

No. Considering the dangers of the job and how firefighters are much much less corrupt than cops if firefighters are corrupt at all; they deserve more.

I'm for merit pay. Forget a salary. Pay them $1,000 for every fire they put out. $100 for an EMS run. About $20 for getting the cat out of a tree.

That might encourage the wrong behavior!
OP: no, not by a long shot. I am not against the 2% increase, but 6% is crazy.

No. They have extra benefits that most people don't get. They get more time off. They also all either have side jobs or small businesses for extra income.
Did you know that if firefighters have surgery due to heart related issues it's considered work related and covered at 100%?
If you add all the extra benefits and the extra income most firefighters are making close to 6 figures.

I'm hoping one shows up in the thread to weigh in.

Historically governments in La. Have underpaid their employees, but made up for it with extreme benefits. That is one reason we have these bloated public service pension programs.
It was a way of kicking the can down the road and letting future generations pay the bill.
We guess what it's time. Underfunded pension programs, high rates for healthcare, generous holiday and sick leave plans, and it's time for raises?
Pay people what they are worth , and feel in all these generous benefits.

No. Not when you factor in all the benefits.

Can't they pick up extra shifts with that time off, or is that prohibited?
GF's family had some firefighters in it, and they made out well. Loafed around most of the time and made tons in overtime.

firefighters do have a hard job but I would rather face a fire allday long than tPOS that try to grab your gun, then have the media and them paintes as a racist bully.

they deserve more.
They are paid fairly for the hours that they work. If they need more money they have plenty of off time to get a second job or just pop open a beer and relax if they don't need the $$.

They could probably privatize the FD and get people to be firemen for 1/2 of the cost. Purge the older firefighters if they start asking for raises and get out of the retirement game. Only provide health insurance if the law requires it.
Not that our taxes would go down as a result.

That is not 81 days off per year. Remember, firefighters work 24 hr shifts. So 15 days of paid leave. I'm a ff in TN. Our holiday hours are not time off, but time and a half pay for having to work holidays.
Also, does the 360 hrs include sick time, or is it just vacation?

Not at all. Not sure if it holds true down there, but up here firefighters and police can retire with full benefits and pension at 20 years, so a 40 year old can retire and go get another job and basically double his income.
That needs to be stopped, as it's causing our cities and state to go broke with pension obligations. They should at least be required to work 30 years before those benefits kick in.

My department requires 30 years to retire. Every department around me is between 25-30 years with a 21 y/o age requirement to be hired. Most people stay on a few years longer than the minimum retirement. And I completely agree, 20 years is way too short
