Something under $50.
the kid likes hunting, fishing, 4wheeling, etc.
is he too young for a pocket knife?

Knife would not be a first choice, still young. Lives in city or rural area?

Tigerdeacon Jr. is about to turn 5 so here are some things I think he would like:
1. Something that shoots real bullets.
2. Something that explodes.
3. A real bulletproof vest
4. A huge bowie knife or machete
5. Real bullets, no matter what caliber
Realistically, some good choices would be:
A shooting game that shoots soft nerf bullets so he can practice gun safety.
Anything camouflage, shirts, pants, etc.
A cheap pair of binoculars
Maybe a "grownup" fishing combo.

My 5 yr. old loves his knife. CRKT makes it. It's called Nathan's Knife. I helped him paint and put it together.

I bought my son a Daisy Red Rider when he turned 5. Started with gun safety from the get go. And the result is a 14 year old kid who has impeccable muzzle control, trigger awareness, handling skills, etc. The real gift was in the follow up activities.

what about a spotting scope

Get him a stud finder, wrapping paper rolls, a roll of duct tape, a few big boxes, a cheap tape measure. Thats the kind of shite my kid played with at 5.

A daisy BB gun. Never to early to start gun safety, and it will be fun for him as well.

Look, I know you said 50 bucks yet I have to say one of the best gifts I have ever received was a Louisiana lifetime hunting and fishing license when I was a kid. Currently they're 200-500 bucks depending on the kids age. I got mine for a birthday present when I was 13 from my dad. I hunt and fish many species and the 200 he spent over 20 years ago would not cover 2 years of licenses now plus the headache of actually having to go get it every year. I also lived in Texas for 10 years and did not have to pay out of state fees. I know they have lifetimes in other states too if he is not in LA. I know that does not help the budget yet maybe you could get creative and go in with others etc

flashlight, binoculars, anything camouflage.
regarding the gun and knife - that is a personal choice and every parent knows his/her child best. was too early for both my son and daughter but not by much!

The next outdoorsy thing I plan on buying my 6 year old is a small cast net (3 foot or so). He loves when I use mine and gets excited to see all the little wild things I catch. I caught a small gar in it this past weekend and he's still talking about it.
Good luck.
Good luck.
