I'm not asking for anything related to the government. I'm saying that societies complete lack of empathy for the kid is a bad thing. He didn't harm anyone, and it was unusual behaviour. Give him that slap on the wrist until he does something that victimizes someone.
Costing him lots of money on a revoked scholly isn't going to do anything but cause him hardship, thats it. It doesn't benefit him or OSU. Its just petty revenge.

Well football players are bringing in revenue so there's that

He learns that there are consequences to being an idiot and the university sends a strong message that this shite isn't tolerated.

I feel like you're trolling, because you honestly seem to be advocating that this kid face no consequences for what he did. Revenge? Why even bring that completely, 100% irrelevant word up in this thread unless you're trolling..?
This kid made a decision and faces consequences for it. He wasn't kicked out of school or charged with anything (which would get a lot closer to your "throwing the book at him" than simply losing one year of a scholarship). This is as simple as a "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" situation...dude charged onto the field, got slammed and taken off the field by cops, and lost some scholarship money. Pretty open and shut situation IMO, and anyone arguing for the kid here is either missing things intentionally, or borderline stupid.

ETA: And I'm talking about the university sending a message about kids running onto the field during the game.

if i remember right, the streaker at the oregon state game not only got expelled, but whatever he was charged with got him put on the sexual offender list (for life?)
Well streaking in front of a bunch of kids will do that

Different standards for folks that bring in revenue
If so, then we're on the same page.

So many inconsistencies here:
1. All the 'stand-your-ground' arguments are just a bunch of prevaricated rationalization - there was no threat. Coach's response was disproportional physical assault, was obviously not required, and appeared vindictive in its intent.
2. What happens to the kids that storm fields and arenas after 'big' wins? Are they all charged? Do they all have the book thrown at them, too?
3. What exactly is the grave harm that has been done by such a juvenile stunt? Is it better or worse than kids yelling obscenities at college games? Is it better or worse than under age kids attending college games under the influence? Is it better or worse than fans getting into fist fights at college games?
The bravdo surrounding the abuse of this kid is squalid.

bout time someone at OSU received an actual punishment.

Are you one of those people that think differing opinions are always stupid?
Taking the scholly money is a big deal. There are a lot of different punishment options that could have gotten him and the one chosen seems disproportionately strong. Community Service, official apologies, sandwich boards that say "I shouldn't run on fields", etc. Lots of ways to deal with this.
Everyone is so crime and punishment these days that you can't do something stupid while your young any more. The stakes are too high with these cheering peanut galleries calling for 'punishment', and calling any empathy 'slaps on the wrist'.

Monica Seles says a fan jumping out of the stands and running on the field is a big deal.

In this instance, nothing. But what if he had a knife and stabbed a player, coach, official, etc.? (that has happened). What if he attacked an unsuspecting person on the field? (that has happened)
There are a litany of very dangerous "what if's" that can be presented in these types of situations. You're using the benefit of hindsight to chastise the OSU coach's response. He didn't have that benefit when the event was taking place in real time. You have to treat each of these situations as a "worse case scenario", even though the likelihood is that nothing bad will happen.

Any "abuse" this kid received was 100% a result of his actions. Life lesson #1, there are consequences to stupid behavior. I've never been to a sporting event where I was forced to run on to the playing field before, during, or after a a game. As to the revocation of his scholarship, part of punishment is to serve as a deterrent for future behavior.

Sure you can. But an important part of the growing up experience is learning that actions have consequences.
Not showing up to your final means you fail the class. Acting the fool and rushing the field during a game played and coached by very aggressive, very strong meatheads operating at a high emotional intensity means you may be eating some turf if one catches you.

Nobody has really "called" for anything. I'm just supporting the right for this man's scholarship sponsor (which is NOT the university, mind you) to set the criteria by which they are rewarded and revoked.

But yes, if you didn't think the athletes should be paid, I do think it's worth noting in this discussion how inconsistent that is.
quote:I mean, it definitely sends a great message to current students to not do the same thing. Not that this is earth shattering new info, but it is also sending the message to students that they just aren't as important as the football player.
