How come I've never heard of this before???

The size of the patch is unknown, as large items readily visible from a boat deck are uncommon. Most debris consists of small plastic particles suspended at or just below the surface, making it impossible to detect by aircraft or satellite. Instead, the size of the patch is determined by sampling. Estimates of size range from 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) (about the size of Texas) to more than 15,000,000 square kilometres (5,800,000 sq mi) (0.41% to 8.1% of the size of the Pacific Ocean), or, in some media reports, up to "twice the size of the continental United States

I keep hearing about this and have never seen an actual picture of it

What happens when it hits an island?
You'd think the environmentalists would be squawking about this thing day and night

This. And i find it extremely hard to believe that a satellite cannot get an image of it if it is truly that big.

China been throwing trash in the ocean for years. Should arrive on California shore in a couple years.

Maybe we should drop a nuke on it?

This. Seems like radar/sonar would do the trick.

This seems like something Al Gore could get behind and make a little money off it.

Nothing a few new taxes and more government regulation can't fix.

This is God's way of collecting all the garbage together in one spot so that we can keep it contained. Someone needs to invent a massive floating garbage processing platform and go out there and handle it. God's done the hard part, get to it science!

You can't see it because its not exactly visible on the surface. Most of the garbage has broken down into swirling mass of plastic syrup and tiny pieces, which appears to be getting into the bloodstream of marine life. Vice has a 3 part series on it.
that was a terrible "series."
So there is no island of trash, but there is a large area with more accumulation of crap. So nothing to see here, pretty much.

Where is the garbage patch in the Atlantic?

We have something similar in the US. We call it Detroit. I don't see any environmental groups bitching about it though.
