Pathetic someone would spend that much for any bottle of beer. It's everything I hate about the craft beer scene.

Is this really that common?

A $4000 bottle of beer is no longer in the craft beer realm. It's not something you camp out for at Specs. It's something more akin to a rare wine, which routinely go for $4000+/bottle at auction.

Why is that pathetic? People do that all the time for really rare bottles of wine and scotch.

What do you care what somebody wants to spend their money on?

Get off my lawn!

Serious I love good beer but I don't get the obsession that would have some one that deep into the game to spend 4k on one bottle of beer. Or wine for that matter. I don't understand it.

If I had the discretionary income to do that and still provide a comfortable life for myself and my family while still saving for my retirement, I'd do it without hesitation. Can't take money with you.

I can't justify spending OB (Outdoor Board) money on a boat, but i hold my tongue and go fishing with them while they pound Bud Lights.

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on beer, but if i was rich, who knows. Maybe one time. I'm sure they could taste the rare.

if I had the money, I most certainly would

I love collecting rare stuff, and beer is a pretty big hobby of mine, so collecting extremely rare beers would really interest me

I'd buy it if my palate was able to taste the rare.

I'm not even close to that level so my wallet is safe.

If I had that kind of money I would probably move up to collecting wine and scotch

Spending that amount on one beer seems crazy but "investing" that much, in this case more, in a cellar is much more logical and fun.

This goes beyond being a craft beer lover/enthusiast and is more like fanaticism. It's not really a representation of the craft beer scene as a whole.

I read that the other day... definitely takes "whale" to another level.

I didn't even know so many beers that rare existed.

I guess I'll get on BeerAdvocate and post ISO Cantillon Soleil De Minuit and see what happens.

We can be certain that Kim Jong Il won't reply.

There's a secret beer trading network on the deep web. Pretty exclusive.

I've been lucky enough to try a lot of pretty rare stuff... several vintages of Zwanze, several years worth of Dark Lord, Utopias, Rare BCS, Heady Topper... but this is another level. Maybe another several levels.

Stormaksporter, I believe.

There were a few rare ones that night, unfortunately a few weren't all that good.

The Stormaksporter was delicious.

ETA: It's Stormaktsporter, and I believe we had the Käggen! Stormaktsporter, which is the barrel aged version. Maybe we tried both.

He's got some impressive vintage and tough to find brews. He also has a lot of stuff that wont benefit from aging. Also has a few that would be available off the shelf and equally dusty at his local shop. From my experience there is no conceivable way that he can drink the beers fast enough to enjoy them at their prime.

To each their own, but what I see here is a beer collection. Made to be looked at and not consumed. What fun is that?
