Not saying they're not but also not for sure why so many are pimping them as being elite despite not having played anyone yet.

All I can think back to is the first of the Wisconsin game when Melvin Gordon was healthy.

Just sayin'. Let's pump the brakes a bit.

they grew up in the last three games it seems like and are playing as a cohesive unit for the most part.

stacking the box and forcing teams to throw seems to be working well

I don't think they are elite yet either. As soon as a big offensive line with a good RB plays us, we will see if we can stop the run. I have all the confidence in the world that we can stop a great passing team, but a power running team will give the defense fits.

I'm worried about being able to pressure the QB. We look really good everywhere else.

Completely agree. this Board is incredible reactive and seems to forget that Wisconsin hung 24 on us in 3 quarters with a garbage qb.

Defensive line as a whole is garbage....

So we dominated ULM and Sam Houston....
Wait till they get 24 Hung on them this weekend.

some of our best defenses weren't as impressive as this unit has been since the first half of wisconsin. I am with you in that its too early to call them elite but I like what i have seen. We only have a couple opponents that run a power running game...this defense is built for the spread.

With that defensive line, I don't think you can call them elite. LSU's secondary creates a world of problems for teams with average passing games.
It looks like a better and deeper overall group than last year.

i think they will be up there with the best weve had under miles, even if not as good as 2010 and 2011, that is still a great d. And def enough to handle Miss State. They dont scare me.

And lets not act like teams werent able to move the ball against that 2011 Defense. I dnt care who we played, we havent shut out two opponents in a row in 30 years.

I'm optimistic but not nervous about our Defense. Not worried about the secondary but the DLINE. IMO we haven't played anyone to show that we are truly an elite defense yet. Gordon ran all over us when he was in, Tanner McEvoy sucks as a passer, ULM and SHSU both suck. This weekend we can prove it on the field one way or the other.

I agree they look good, but elite? It's a little premature for that title. Get back to me after Moo-state. We will know a lot more after Saturday night.

No. The secondary is elite. The front 7 is TBD.

Hardly any team has "played anyone yet" and we are ranked top 5 nationally in pretty much every category. We may not have evidence of being elite, but we certainly have enough to say this is a top tier def.

We weren't dominant the entire game against wisky, buy they certainly answered the call in the 2nd half.

I guess it depends on what you are comparing. This team is elite when compared to the other defenses fielded this year, based on the first 3 games, which were on average, the same in terms of strength of opponent across the board for major teams.

I don't think you can compare them to elite defenses in history at this point. They have looked great since halftime of game 1, though.

eta:
And just to enhance the SOS counter-argument: I find it disingenuous to dismiss the team because of the teams they have played so far. As stated, EVERY team to which we tend to compare ours has played weak opponents. It's as if some of you would only concede if LSU had played 3 top 10 teams while others maintained their cupcake schedules. It makes absolutely no sense.

No you're not but keep in mind this is an LSU board so only greatness comes from anything associated. you may need to refill your glass with more koolaid so you can see more clearly

LSU has an NFL secondary and a good, not great collegiate front 7.

LSU is hurting at DT, they have NFL OLB's masquerading as DE's, and LB's who aren't physical enough to stuff the run game of large OL's.

Look for LSU to dictate down and distance by stacking the line on 1st and second d down to let the secondary work on passing downs.
