yup, during our 15 years of having a wrestling program we were usually in the top ten and won the sec 7 out of 15 times.

also the only southern school with an ncaa boxing natty. we usually won the sec in boxing too.

I would imagine we would add men's soccer as it's more popular than wrestling in Louisiana,

That has a lot to do with not having college programs. Nationally, Soccer is the 5th most participated in HS boy's sport with Wrestling being 6th. Some years this flips as they are normally pretty close. In regions where there are a lot of college programs, Wrestling normally tops soccer and visa-versa.

Title IX really screwed this up. LSU should honestly have both. Missouri has a great program and it would be nice if other SEC schools reignited their programs.

There really aren't, though.

People down voting you are jokes. LSU men's soccer would rule the South. All of the talent in Louisiana and South Texas would make a men's soccer team nearly unstoppable.

LSU was very successful in wrestling. Another example is: Kevin Jackson

LINK

The only reason I know about him is watching being a fan of MMA in the early years (he lost to Frank Shamrock way back in the day).

Won a gold medal. The only reason he left LSU was they discontinued the program. Must suck to be a 3-time All American and have the program pulled out from under you! Was a 4-time all american.

Id rather not add two more sports that are going to suck from the budget

Kevin Jackson who fought in the early UFC, was an olympic gold medalist in 1992 and national champ at Iowa State where he transferred from LSU his senior year after they dropped the program.

They had it and it was a pretty good team.
The Jones kid from Zachary that played football was one of the better wrestlers back in the 80's.
Title IX would have ended but the SEC never really got on board, all the Midwest teams are about the only ones left. Doubt it ever comes back. It's more of a club sport and LSU probably needs to go that route. It would be popular considering how good LA has become with high school wrestling.

No doubt.

but it has little to do with there being "great in-state wrestling programs."

It was Larry Sciacchetano and before that it was the late Dale Ketelsen.

Sciacchetano is now working for USA Wrestling, I think.

We just need to wait until the Power 5 conferences vote on having football scholarships not count against Title IX.
Uh, I don't think that's up to the Power 5. I think that's more up to the Department of Justice, the Department of Education (Office of Civil Rights) and some federal judges. And I believe they've already decided.

LSU had a good program but was cut due to budget after title IX.

This. Wrestling is a great colligiate sport and I think it would awesome to get it back, but the football team takes up too many male schollies to support another large male roster (Soccer, wrestling, etc). As one poster pointed out, our junior and HS programs don't really compare to schools in Oklahoma, Penn, and the mid-west, but the physical talent is there. I enjoyed my time wrestling. Some of the hardest work a young man can put in, and success isn't as dependent upon pure physical athletic gifts as sports like football and bball. A relatively unathletic kid can work hard and become a pretty good wrestler in his weight class.

Coach Larry Sciacchetano

quote:

Sciacchetano coached nine years at Louisiana State (1975-85), leading the Tigers to seven Southeast Conference titles and two eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Tournament.

He was twice named NCAA National Coach of the Year (1970, 1975).

LSU has had a wrestling club on and off for the last few years. They participate in the NCWA which includes around 150 other schools. Florida and Auburn have teams there as well. There are conference and national championships. We had a couple of all Americans in 2007.

I agree with your first statement. But often the best teams from LA can beat the best teams from OK. Where they are better is in the amount of individual talent.

You are 100% correct. In addition to that of LSU were to add amy men's programs they would have to add a women's as well. The number of scholarship athletes for all sports has to reflect the number of men & women students.

As for the guy who said some entity might not count CFB scholarships when determining Title IX compliance, what are you thinking? I'd recommend you do a little research on Title IX before you make a statement like that in the future.
