I just saw on the ESPN ticker that Michael Sam was listed along with NFL, MLB, NCAAF, etc. All it said was that he recorded a sack and two quarterback hits.

Am I crazy or is ESPN wrong for doing this? The guy came out; he's gay. We got it. He was the seventh round pick...very few professional athletes deserve their own segment on the ticker.

I will bet you that Sam doesn't want this publicity. Does ESPN ever take this into consideration?

Bringing this up makes you a homophobe / closet homo bigot racist privileged cis. ESPN is going to sent you an alert every time Michael Sam farts and you will like it or else.

ESPN should have titled it "Gay News".

How can they be wrong when you started a thread about it?

I don't know that it's a simple issue. On one hand, he is a 7th round draft pick - so his roster spot is not even close to guaranteed. It's important for him to get as famous as possible so that he can have a post football career, ala Tim Tebow, getting paid to speak/show up places. On the other hand, he's only the second SEC Defensive Player of the Year to be drafted outside the first two rounds. So maybe "distractions" are the only reason he fell so low, and now that he's playing his performance on the field is all that is needed to secure his future income.

You know who keeps the Michael Sam story alive and well? People who whine about it.

Lol

Dude was trying to get his own show on Oprah's network. He's eating the publicity up.

Know what they care about? Ratings. Stop watching and they will change their methods.

The only ticker he should be on is Entertainment tonight or access Hollywood or whatever it's called

Dude plays in the NFL due to societal reasons, not because he's a good football player

I don't let it bother me that much. ESPN will run anything into the ground as long as the person has a little notoriety because ESPN is the MSNBC of the sports world. They inflate things to get mass appeal AKA appeal to the lowest common denominators.

See Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel 24/7 news cycles for instance.

If Johnny Manziel came out of the closet the internet would fold into itself and create a blackhole.

ETA: Would have been a slick PR move for Sam to switch to #42 last year at Mizzou before publicly coming out, and then hailing Jackie as his "hero" that he studied up on and wants to emulate. Just thought of this.
