Is KO a decent stock to buy some shares and just hold for long term? I'm not an active trader and would like to just buy and hold a few companies.

yes. there are probably better ones, but KO will be around long after you are gone, and your investment will grow.

I bought ORBC yesterday while it was down. Their earnings call is next Thursday. Looks like positive news and I can hopefully get in and out with a 10-15% profit. I'm watching most of what has been listed in this thread for buy and hold stuff.

Is KO a decent stock to buy some shares and just hold for long term?
Warren Buffet also says hello. He owns about 15 billion worth of KO.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here for a second concerning KO just to get some discussion going.
While of course determining which stocks to purchase depends on many factors, I don't see KO as an appealing buy unless you have a very large fund and want to be conservative.
Those are all fine brands, and Coca Cola is definitely a top 5, if not 1 or 2, brand worldwide. But soft drink consumption is on the decline as people look to healthier options, and while they have plenty of brands to take advantage of that, their bread and butter is Coke and I don't see how it can get any bigger. If Coke sales decline, Coca Cola declines.
Also, looking at KO's valuation, it currently trades at 21 x's earnings, and 17 x's forward earnings. That isn't cheap for a fully mature company with a $172 billion market cap and minimal growth prospects. Not to mention it currently is more expensive than the S&P 500, yet has underperformed it over the past 5 years.
That is correct, but I think it's disingenuous using Buffet as a reason to purchase a stock for the average person. Buffet has owned his core companies for decades, and with the sheer size of his holdings, he is happy simply banking the dividends. The same can't be said for a young person with modest income and a few thousand to purchase stocks. I'm not saying that is the case for most posters here, but I think it's safe to say nobody here is banking 100's of millions of dollars simply off the dividends alone, such as Buffet.
I know plenty here own KO, and that's fine I'm not bashing owning the stock, you aren't going to lose money owning the most recognized brand in the world. I'm just stating a case why it may not be a great buy right now, and if you're looking at going that route you might be better off simply buying the S&P 500. And if you have a longer time horizon and can handle volatility, maybe some companies with better growth prospects are a better route.

Thanks for the analysis. I completely agree. I'd buy at $35. But if you're going to buy and hold there's nothing wrong with entering at $39. Now, speaking of buying and holding...I know soft drink consumption is decreasing here, but what about worldwide?
And yes, you're right about Buffet too. Not all that he does translates to the ordinary or novice investor (that would be me).
I think I read that he receives a 50% dividend from KO...

Yes you are correct, they still have plenty area to grow worldwide, but IMO that growth will have to be substantial to overcome the decline in the U.S., where the majority of their sales are.
Don't get me wrong, it's definitely possible for them to grow, and again I don't think anyone will lose money buying KO, but I guess my point in my previous post was why not look at other good companies that have better growth potential?
