The yield pigs are going to go to slaughter on all of these dividend yielders.

Some people really love stocks that pay good dividends, almost to the point that they forget about everything else.

What the poster above me said.

Specifically, the trigger for this will be rising interest rates that no longer make those yields attractive. The yield pigs will follow the yield back to the bond market.

unless you are currently retired(or very close to), dividend growth is more important than current yield

That's a very strange thing to say.

Shareholder yield is a much better measure than div growth.

as a 32 year old, id much rather buy a stock with a 2.5% yield that grows 8-10% a year than a 5% yield that doesn't grow. high yielding stocks also riskier as a dividend cut could cause the stock price to plummet.

Your focus on yield is crazy talk. Google shareholder yield, you clearly missed my point.

Yield grows if the stock price is dropping. You like that?

Target (TGT) down ~4%

ETA: What just happened to Walgreen's?

There is nothing wrong with a yield strategy.

Bonds don't have a lot of room to run. There is a large & growing community of older investors seeking yield.

There are certainly stocks among the div yielders that are overvalued right now, but if you're investing on even a 10 year horizon, those yields are pretty juicy as a class and they provide some downside protection.

And heck, the Dow is only up something like 1% this year and is lagging the S&P and Nasdaq pretty significantly the last few years.

I'd much rather hold a basket of yielders than growth right now.

So they listened to Obama and are being punished for it? cool.

ETA: it appears you are correct. Amazing how that led to an instant, rather large, sell off.
5 times volume for WAG today.
