What in the hell is wrong with this guy? (In regards to Speck limits)

I know a bunch of people have had tough summers, but come on, we had one of the longest winters on record. Honestly, I fish out of Cocodrie and this has been one of the best summers I've ever had.
This is where the guy really goes over the side:

The trout came late this year. In June, there were two weeks when it was pretty easy to go round up 45 or 50 trout, and ever since then, it's been like playing a game of Battleship -- B7, bomb, B3, bomb,"
This is where the guy really goes over the side:
quote:
"I'm amazed that the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries hasn't suspended all speckled trout fishing," Wray said. "If they were on the water, they wouldn't be waiting on data collection. It's not a secret to anyone that the bubble has burst."
quote:
He'd like to see the state's speckled trout creel limit dropped from 25 to six fish, and the redfish limit dropped from five to three.
quote:
"The way it generally plays out is I'll go to a good spot -- let's say the wall at Bayou Rigaud -- and catch three (keeper) fish there," Wray said. "Then I might catch 10 throwbacks, and I've then burnt 13 shrimp. Then I catch nothing but catfish, so I've got to move.

Redfish size needs to be lowered.

This is a charter captain asking to drop the speck limit to 6???? Who's going to want to come to Louisiana and pay $700+ to take a charter and catch 6 specks per person??? I'm all for lowering the limit, but that drastically is stupid. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with the redfish population, so why even bring it up.

Maybe if they lowered the limit on Specs those $700 guides would try to catch quality specs instead of a limit of dinks and then want to go home.

Why lower the limits when they're more than enough fish out there? Look at the fiddling they did in the western part of the state and it hasn't done squat.

This, and if people are having trouble hitting the limit already, then the issue seems to be sorting itself out.
Specs reproduce like rabbits. If they aren't in your area it probably has a lot more to do with the weather and water than overfishing. Venice gets hit hard year round and you could still fill a truck bed with trout if it were legal. Why? Because it's prime speck spawning habitat with lots of tidal movement and varying salinity. I don't doubt fishing may hurt a few populations in a few areas, but I don't buy the argument that "I used to catch em here and now I don't, so something is obviously fricked up."

Who really needs 25 trout a trip? I completely agree with lowering the limit.
I may be skewed but I look at the number of charter captains alone who fish Venice (where I fish 90% of the time) there has to be well over 100 guides in the area alone plus many recreational anglers there is a TON of pressure on the fish. 15 would save more for next time.

Just saying that would be more reasonable than 6 I think there are PLENTY of specks in south LA to justify a 25 per limit.

I would love to catch limits, but I just can't. Until everyone is catching 25 specks every time they go out, don't frick with the limits IMO.

Well for openers, conservation for the sake of conservation really doesn't work...then you end up with an overabundance of fish and the stuff they prey on will suffer.
If I'm so lucky to catch my limit, I'm more than happy to pass some fresh fish on to family, co-workers, and friends who don't fish. Believe me, none is ever wasted.

What's the difference if the population just replenishes itself?

If they lowered the limit to 15 at least I could catch a limit now and then. So it would be good for my ego.
But I haven't seen the numbers to support this. Most guys I know are having a slower than average summer...but let's not panic.

I agree and disagree with him. Yes the fishing around there isn't what it used to be. As he is a family friend of mine, Mr Danny knows his facts. Last summer I limited out down there a few times and the summer before it was every trip in the same spot 100 trout each time, almost every weekend. this summer in the same spots not as lucky, yes I catch fish but not what I used too. I blame it mainly on weather and fishing pressure. Look at Marty lacoste in dularge he loads the boat everyday with trout and reds. I don't need 25 specks a person anyways I'm fine with 10 to 15 a person. But hey I'm just a weekend warrior who fishes for fun. He knows a lot more than most of us on here just saying

Then why this knee jerk reaction? Hell let me throw something else out, we have had a ton of freshwater from the river swamp the area the last couple years. I'm sure that dispersed some of the spawning fish. Let's have a normal south Louisiana winter and see how things go. For all we know these guys are pushing this bs to shorten their days (and perhaps even save some fuel).
