Recorded a traffic stop earlier. Officer made me turn it off.

I got pulled over earlier for speeding. Clocked me at 4 over. Fine. Before he got to the vehicle I turned my phone on record and sat it on the center console.

Officer saw it recording when I got my license and asked me to step out. Patted me down and said I'm not allowed to record him for officer safety reasons and was very curious as to why I even wanted to record.

Since I was alone and the officer was polite I dropped it there and he let me go with a warning. But man they really do not like to be recorded.

kudos to you for:

A) protecting yourself by recording the interaction.
B) not being a dick when he was being polite and asked you to turn it off.
C) Not being a "its my right as an american, so frick you" kind of guy towards the cop.

The United States Supreme Court disagrees.

Doesn't seem that he did you any favors to me.

I would love to hear his reasoning on that. Dirty arse pig.

What was the speed limit that you were blazing through at four mph over?

What was his jurisdiction if you don't mind me asking? Also, and FWIW, if his dash cam were operating properly, the audio of his "request" to turn off your video would have been captured.

ETA: Just saw your post stating it was Beaumont PD. Posted while I was typing. Can't say I'm particularly surprised, though I thought for sure it would have been somewhere in LA. That kind of thing is commonplace with the fuzz in and around Acadiana.

The police record you from their cruiser,
why can't you record them?

You probably caught a break by being cool.

yeah, why are you being patted down? no probable cause to do that (of course it sounds like you consented) or even reasonable suspicion. and you can damn well record whatever you want.

you got played.

the fourth amendment isn't just for drug dealers. it protects us all. it's the FOURTH freaking amendment to the Constitution. Use it.

Fwiw I snapped a pic of a cop in France and suddenly I had a machine gun pointed at me. French cops are camera shy too.

I would have probably done the same if he was polite and not the dick head that cops can be. I have found not playing this is america card works alot better most of the time.

That's ridiculous. They can't make you turn off a recorder. What state are you in?

You should of manned up and continued to record. It is not illegal to do so as long as you aren't interfering with them.

And you even let him pat you down? What a wimp! Seriously, you're a puss.

You realize 75% of them have mics in their shirts and a camera in their car recording them right?
