New Orleans Street Performers that complain...

when you don't give them a dollar.
I go down to New Orleans every once in a while to shoot some pictures in the Quarter. I shoot a lot of the street performers and I tip them as well if they are good. The last two times I was down there, the same arse hole tells me something when I took a picture of him but didn't tip. The first time, he was just standing in a garbage can, holding a sign that reads, "White Trash".
The last time I was down there, he had painted himself gold and was trying to be a statue (like the two silver painted guys). I snap a picture and start walking off. He breaks character to tell he I need to tip him since I took his picture. I didn't say any thing, just continue to walk off and he is still yelling shite at me.
Sorry buddy, you gotta earn my dollar.
Here is the picture from last year, the picture of him in gold was a bad image, I deleted it

If you don't think they deserve a tip, don't take their picture. Seems like the logical solution. Why would you want pictures of shitty performers, anyway?

You took his pic, should have tipped the guy.

They're standing in public, if they want money tell them to get a real job. Same with panhandlers. I walk around the Quarter almost daily. I hate these people.

bullshite. The guy isn't even performing or earning it. If he was playing an instrument or something, yeah sure tip..he's actually providing something for you.
This guy is, literally, standing still while covered in paint. Why the frick should he get paid money for standing still? If his only retort is "well that's how I pay the bills" then I feel zero sympathy for him.

Well, he provided you with a picture, so he technically did something for you. You should have just tossed the guy a dollar in return for the picture.

Gotta earn it, and I also view it as a collective. I am not going to give every a-hole or group of assholes on the street some money if I pause for a second to listen or watch. Sometimes you'll be one of the few who gets a buck, sometimes not.
But just cause you took a picture doesn't mean you have to give them anything.

If I was walking around the street in my hometown and took someone's picture should I be obliged to give them money?
The guy is literally standing. And don't give me the "oh, well it's art" deal. He "works" in an arena where he knows good and damn well some people will tip, some won't. That's the nature of it. At least with waiters, barbers, valets, etc. they are actually DOING something for you. They are providing you a service. Street dude ain't doing shite.

Then why did OP take a pic of the guy?

I think if you take a picture of the guy you should probably throw him a single. Still, none of those people should feel like one is obligated to pay anything.

You're an a-hole. If you're going to take a picture of him throw him a buck you dickhead.

Earning your attention enough to warrant a picture you show off to people is worth a dollar?

there should also probably be a drop box outside of every building for donations if anyone takes a picture.
If you don't want your picture taken, don't perform in public.

He likes taking "New Orleans-y" type pictures? If he took a picture of an old arse building, should he tip the owner?

Does the owner wake up every morning and repaint the building to look old then stand next to his work so that tourists can enjoy it and is it customary to tip such a person?

You're being chintzy.
He provided you with value, otherwise you would not have decided to take his pic.
Morally, you should provide him value in return. Like if you pull into an interstate McDonalds to pee, buy something. They provided you value.

I took a pic of the trees in my back yard the other day. Should I go staple gun a few bucks to the trunk of the tree?

It's not that he doesn't want his picture taken, it's that it is customary to tip street performers when you interact with them.
You're free not to tip, but dont be surprised or annoyed when he calls you an arse

No, but he has to put money into it to ensure it is up to par and in good repair.

Of course not. It's also not required to tip a stander. You can if you feel like, or don't. The whole issue here shouldn't be that OP didn't tip. The point should be stander shouldn't have actually walked after him and yelled at him for not doing so.
