Walmart is trying to support organic farming

is the cost difference a supply-chain issue or a production issue?

...

or are we finding out that "going organic" is nothing more than a status symbol?

In the same interview, , an organic activist who co-founded the Cornucopia Institute, suggested that Wal-Mart's cost-cutting drive could undermine the ethical values of organic farming. "One of the reasons people are willing to pay more is that they think they're supporting a different ethic, a different animal husbandry model, and that family farmers are being fairly compensated," Kastel says.

I used to know a guy that plants about 20 acres of "organic" garden and makes like $50K per year off of it. That same 20 acres would maybe clear 1/3rd of that it he didn't claim for it to be organic.

I grow 'organically' (I put that in apostrophes because I am not USDA certified, but I follow the rules) because I can make a lot more money on much less land with not much labor, than if I tried to run a commercial farm. My ethics with running my place have more to do with self-stewardship than any environmental concern, though it is somewhat present.

Would you frickers finally admit to Wal*Mart doing some good things if they can make organic foods more affordable giving more people access to healthier options or would y'all bitch about Whole Foods and Fresh Market closing stores and not being able to compete against a company with cost savings culture ingrained in every level of the corporation?

Well this thread was an interesting read. I'll just say this, you ain't seen shite until you've shopped at a Wegman's, hands down best store there is.

I've seen enough studies to not believe in the certified organic bull crap hype. If you really want to help out and get better food, buy from a local farmer. All the rest is mostly just marketing ploys to get people to pay more with little to no added benefit from the product.

This can be rephrased to say, "our marketing is designed to get people to overpay for stuff so we can make a large profit just like the greedy corporations we always vilify".

If I'm Whole Foods, I don't know if I would mind Wal Mart coming in and squeezing the producers.

Good discussion. I'm not sure if I want to be even more careful about what I buy and eat or just say frick it and eat whatever I want, now.

I shop at four different places and am trying to do some gardening. Sometimes I buy "organic" when it looks better or is the only option (like at Costco). But really focusing on anything beyond portion control,non-(or min)processed, low-starch/sugar/sodium, varied diet and regular exercise and activity stresses me out and is counterproductive.

For the left-wing, self proclaimed intellectuals, environmentalists, it is. They stand out at Whole Foods.
