OT vets -- cat can't meow

She'll open her mouth and no sound will come out, or the meow will be faint and raspy.
She's asymptomatic otherwise. 8 1/2 years old, indoor/outdoor cat. No coughing or sneezing, still eating and drinking.
I know there are a lot of things that can cause a weak/nonexistent meow, but everything I turned up on Google came with other symptoms.

Whatever it is, I wish my cat would develop it. My cat meows non-stop and it drives me fricking nuts.

My Dad's cat has the same problem. My girlfriend's cat is hit or miss. When he gets amp'd up he will do a big howl/roar which can be heard all across the apartment. That lets me know his vocal cords are working.

Same thing happened with my cat at about the same age. She lived another 11 years. Pretty healthy until her heart gave out at age 19+.

There's a blues song in here somewhere.... My Cat Can't Meow and My Pussy Won't Purr.

maybe your cat is autistic?

I have two cats, and neither of them can properly meow. One of them is just like you described. Her meow is either silent or raspy, and the other almost never meows unless she's in some sort of distress, and it comes out as a kitten's mew. Both are 7 1/2.
They're litter mates, and they were rescued from the side of the road at a very young age (just a couple of weeks) after their mother was run over, so we assume that they can't meow properly because their only interaction with cats has been with young kittens, until we adopted them at 10 weeks old.

Today's Cat Fact:
In earlier times a liar's tongue was cut out and fed to the King's cat. Hence the phrase "Cat's got your tongue"
That is why even today in modern times every pussy loves some good tongue.

as long as your cat is breathing and swallowing ok and there are no other symptoms, i would not worry about it.

If you are interacting with your pet cat and you don't hear any noise:
You might be a Beta.
