I doubt it. My dad makes a killing, and I plan to blow the inheritance on myself.

I definitely will. My mother stil doesn't own a house and would be classified as poor. We always lived in apartments or rent houses. If you include my wife's side, maybe not but we still have a long time to catch them. I'm 35, wife is 32. I'm in the pharmaceutical industry and wife is a veterinarian. We have 3 kids, 15, 3 & 6 mths. We have more now in terms of stability than my parents ever had and pay a good bit in student loans. The future is bright.

Considering I'm 1/5 and he's 1/1, I sure as hell hope so.

I would hope to leave my son a larger inheritance than what I recieve from my parents. My dad has several income producing properties, I would hope I never have a need to sell them and can pass them on plus mroe to the next generation.
I will most likely recieve much more than my Dad did, his parents saved their whole life but worked blue collar jobs. Their only asset was their home (paid for) and it would be split 3 ways between their children.
I'm early 30's.

I have the potential to leave more as I only plan on having 1 kid, where as I got 2 siblings. However, I also subscribe to the same doctrine as my parents, you worked your arse off for the money, use it to live well. If I die before I have a chance to use it all, then I guess the kid will get some.

No kids, just turned 30, no doubt in my mind I'll leave more to my kids. Expecting my parents to leave us $0. Not sure about my wife's parents.

My Dad always tells us that he is not planning on leaving us any money, but we will most likely inherit the property, which will be nice. Not sure which child will live on it though. Probably not me.
As for me and my children? I have no idea.

I hope so, but I need another 3 or so years to be able to give a more definitive answer. Based on my career (engineer), on paper I should have greater lifetime earnings than my parents, but my blue collar dad has done pretty well for himself. My mom is already retired, their house is paid off, and they aren't hurting for disposable income (not OT baller status, but what most would call pretty comfortable). Plus they have some land (100 or so acres) and an income producing property that came down from my dad's dad (would love to be able to let those ride on down the line to the next generation). My sister is damn near an OT baller already, and that was before she married a partner in a decent sized law firm last year, so most of the family assets will probably be coming to me one day.
My wife's parents are another story all together. They are still relatively young (early 50s), but unless things change drastically if we get nothing when they go we wouldn't be surprised. FIL owns his own business (which he reluctantly inherited from his dad), but it is not a money maker. We never know if they are doing great or really hurting. We know the house isn't close to paid off. And while they talk a great game when it comes to fiscal responsibility, every time we talk to them or visit they have made another rather large and completely unnecessary purchase (think used RV, multiple old motorcycles to rebuild, hot tub to go next to their new back patio).
ETA - I'm 31, married, one young kid.

Age: 29
1.5 kids - boy due in July-August
I'm fairly certain that I will inherit debt from my parents, so as long as i leave my kids at 0, I'll win

I'm 27 and already make more than either of my parents. I doubt I have much of an inheritance. I don't care. They can give everything to my sister for all I care.

Yes. My parents just left bills for us to pay.

probably. i'm not going to inherit that much...esp if my mom lives as long as her parents
Posted on 4/10/14 at 7:59 am to East Coast Band
Nope. I blow about $30,000/yr. on karate for my kid - he understands that this would have been his inheritance.

I seriously doubt that her financial situation when the time comes will have much bearing on what she inherits. If everything is supposed to be split evenly, you can bet she'll take her half, regardless of how well she's doing.
For me, my folks are already almost 70. If my dad were to die today, my 1/3 of inheritance would come to about $400k. Of course, moms would be usufruct and I'd have to wait till she passed until I could touch it. I'd hope to leave my kids more than that, if I even have kids.
