My deer season to say the least has been not so great. Killed a decent buck (mass wise) in ARK and two small does this season. Now to my question.... Around 5:15 this evening the biggest bodied buck (couldn't get a great look at the horns due to lighting and backdrop) stepped out and walked head up looking at me for about 20 yards. He never would turn and stayed right next to the woods. It was getting dark and I finally decided to take a shot at him because I thought at any moment he was going to ease back in the woods. I took a head facing me neck shot but may have shot in his brisket. After shot he went down on his front legs and then got up and ran off. I didn't have any blood, but if the shot hit brisket or chest I may not have an exit. Has anyone had this happen and what's my outlook? With him going down that way after shot was he hit? Will I find this deer? I keep telling myself I hit him and didn't miss.

Sorry for the long story. I didn't look too much as it was dark and he went into a really thick area. Going back in the AM to give it a look. TIA OB.

Get a dog, don't go tramping around and mess up the scent.

Call around for someone with a dog and go back in the morning.

White hair on the ground?

White hair is almost always a long tracking job with no deer at the end. With a good cold night like tonight though, I'd let him lay and go look tomorrow. Depending on the terrain your chances may be good. Thing is, if there's no blood you're relying on luck.

If he hit the ground you have a good chance at recovery, I hop you didn't jump down and immediately go look and push him further away. I'd try to fjnd a dog ASAP or go look in the morning.

If he dropped like that you might have hit heart, in which case there won't be much blood, but he can't be far off.

I've not had to take that type of shot before, but I may have to someday. W/ the type of situation you described, your choices are two: 1. Make a "neck shot" by aiming at the base of the white spot on the front of the deer's neck. That's a very demanding shot. 2. Aim at the midline in the lower 1/3 of the chest to make a "heart/lung shot." I don't know what kind of bullet/round you were using, but as long as it was adequate and made it into the heart/lungs, I think there's good chance you'll recover a dead deer. It's unlikely you'll have an exit wound, but he'll probably die peacefully overnight.

ETA: I liked this article and the representation of the hear/lungs and neck.LINK

I take that shot all the time. Can't lay off of it. I tell myself "no", but in the end myself never listens. I blame on positive reinforcement. Every time I take it there's instant gratification. Dead deer right there. Only shot one that didn't pile up and she ran 30 yards maybe. And there was a lot of blood. Good luck and let us know what happens. Hope you get him.

On second thought a buddy was telling me he shot a doe facing him last weekend. Think he said bullet went in between shoulder and neck and came out the guts. Deer ran a little ways and piled up. Not a lot of blood. Reason I came back to mention it is because he was using a 444.

I agree with those that think he is dead. If he hit ground and is big you probably hit higher than brisket bring as you said no blood or hair. Have tracked a few like this. Look for leaves turned over or disrupted and hopefully he's heading downhill that would be a good sign. Travel slow and look at terrain cause that bullet is probably swallowed up in the body cavity. Good luck I would be expecting white side up when you find see him.

Hope you find him. I tracked a deer for two hours last week and ran out of blood. Was sick about it, but we had to call it due to darkness and our remoteness.

Wounded deer tend to make a big right handed circle. I saw one that ended up 20 yards behind the deer stand it was shot out of.

You killed that deer! Now, dont give up on him. As other's have suggested, get a dog if possible. Look EVERYWHERE. Look very closely using a tight grid. If it's really thick, you may step on him before you find him. No exit wound may result in no blood on the ground.

I killed two on back to back years just how you described. Both were killed on very small plot in a 3 yr old cutover. Absolutely no blood for either, but were both found inside of 50 yards. The first took quite some time. Six buddies and all were convinced I had missed. Refused to give up and ended up actually stepping on his leg (scared the piss out of me). The second was found quickly with a really good dog.

Take your time with it, you may be a long while before you find blood, maybe a few hundred feet, but you should find something.

IMO if you find him, it will be realatively quick(less than 100 yards or so) If you got in the chest cavity, he is dead. If you didn't, you will not see him again.

FWIW I have killed about 5 hitting low in the brisket, I think all 5 circled back in just about 75 yards or so. Of course these were not head on. I have shot a few head on, but they sat down right there.

took this exact shot on a buck I killed this weekend. I had no exit and no blood trail but he only went 35 yards and was piled up right here....
