That's a great point. Imagine if the Raptors have the #1 pick your freshman year, but the Lakers have it the next year. What to do?
Stay in school at least two more years because I don't want to play for either franchise

That's exactly fair.
Drafts in sports leagues don't operate to be "fair" to good teams. They operate, collude, etc to try and give bad teams a chance to be competitive to increase the competitiveness of the league. They are essentially mini-socialist regimes.
Its all about TRYING to create, manufacture competitive balance and give bad teams/small markets a chance in hell.

Honestly, the only problem in the NBA is the Eastern Conference right now. The West is as competitive as it's been in a long time. Might be time to get rid of East/West and come up with something a little more balanced.

Those things are cyclical.
I heard folks on the MSB saying the NFL divisions should realign because a 7-9 team made the playoffs. Now just, what, 3 years later, that may be the most complete division in the conference.

Get rid of conferences. There is no need to handicap teams into regional schedules in 2013.
1 League- 16 teams make the playoffs - the end

I definitely think they should at least start by getting rid of Divisions, which are stupid.

Whatever gets the Pelicans out of the West.

Well, yeah, pretty safe to assume the Pels are included in the top 16 teams in the entire league - pretty much a travesty that if as one of the top 16 teams they will get no playoff chance. Anyways, its silly to keep the league structured around historically inane geographic ideologies
Fuarrk, New Orleans isnt even on the West Coast - just lol.

quote:This is either untrue or inconsequential. The smallest market teams have been better than the largest market teams in the past decade.
Small market teams rarely get high level free agents,

This is so unfair to small market teams its ridiculous.

The "woe is the small market team" argument is bogus.

You are incredibly naive about the NBA. I don't know what to tell you if you think this is a good idea.

I wish they would just cut the season in half. Problem solved and no complicated draft format needed.
I personally loved the strike shortened season where they would sometimes play 3 straight

b) eliminating tanking is a good idea, and this is one way to do it. I don't know if this is a good idea or not.

What? Are you kidding? Traditionally that is not even close to the truth, this year and the Spurs not withstanding.
The Spurs are the only small-market champion in the past like 40 years, unless you count Detroit.

listen, salt lake city will never be NYC. milwaukee wont be LA. we cant legislate fair amoung cities. and the truth is-- its about being well run. i never hear people raving about living in san antonio, but they are perennially great. why? b/c they are run fantastically. the knicks are a dumpster fire despite signing huge free agent amare staudamire and melo forcing his way there. they are run poorly. despite being a major market.
i dont love this proposed system, but i love any idea that doesnt reward tanking. having any team in your league trying to be bad if awful for the league. and whats worse is it is completely beneficial for the team to do it, b/c it does pay off.

Then give everyone "in the lottery" and equal chance to get the number one pick.
Or the bottom 7 teams get an equal chance, and the next 7 get an equal chance for 8-15. Something like that.

This idea is fine and dandy until the league decides to expand or contract within the next 30 years.

Awful awful idea. Tanking is a bad team management problem, not a league problem. This type of nonsense is so unnecessary and a massive over correction.
...Miami's big 3 can be free agents after this season. They all opt out and sign with the franchise that they all know, in advance, will be drafting Wiggins or Parker. People bitch and moan about how unfair that was for the next decade.

quote:Absolutely. The Lakers don't have championships because Los Angeles is big, or else the Clippers would have titles, too. The fact is that the Lakers are historically well-run.
and the truth is-- its about being well run.
The Grizzlies have no titles not because Memphis is small, or else the Spurs would have no titles as well. The fact is that the Grizzlies, though well-run currently, are historically poorly-run.
