re: NCAA football rule changes for 2013

The targeting rule is going to create controversy all season long. I understand the intent of the rule but during a play the offensive player could easily move his head as the defensive player is in the process of hitting him and create the head to head contact.
SEC refs are going to screw the pooch on this one.

I don't get that either. They say its to have a reasonable amount of time to run a play, but if I spike it with one second left on the clock then I have time to run a play.
What am i not getting about that.
I read it as "There has to be at least 3 seconds on the clock to snap and spike it", not "Get the spike before 3 seconds on the clock".
So if the clock stops for a first down with 3 or less seconds left, the offense cannot line up and spike it. I can't imagine that if the clock is winding down from say 10 seconds, and the team lines up and spikes at 2, they wouldn't allow that.

That's a terrible picture to use. That was the play where TM hit the Ole Miss guy along the sideline with his shoulder and the ref threw a flag for helmet to helmet.
That's when Les called TM over and pointed to the scoreboard and said keep playing like that. I've got your back.

How is this "launching"? I guess if they don't want mathieu to hit him in the head, he would have to "launch" at the runners legs.
I am afraid we will see a lot more leg injuries.

The NCAA is ruining college football, just like Goodell is ruining the pros.

not to mention now defenders near the line of scrimmage have to worry about 300# line man aiming at their knees now, all while trying not to hit a guy up around the shoulders. I would be pissed if I was a LB and you told me copeland got a 10 yard running start and he could come at me below the waist!

While I agree, it's a terrible attempt at a tackle. Wrap up - head up was the way we were all taught to tackle. Today's defensive players (especially DBs) just lunge/leap at ballcarries and lead with their heads and shoulders (just like TM in that picture). No attempt whatsoever to actually "tackle" the guy. I don't think he's purposely "targeting" the head, but with the form he's using it makes it look that way.

Not a fan of the 3 second spike rule. Among others but this one seems odd to me.

with the NCAA being seen as "weak" right now, will we see more laws like this to "poke" at us and coaches just b/c they feel somewhat powerless?

agreed. It seems strange that they say you don't have enough time to spike it, but you do have enough time to run another play (other than a spike)

You can't actually snap the ball and spike it in 1 second. Maybe they should have made it a 2 second rule but they're not saying you can't run another play.. you just can't spike it and run a play after that. You could run your field goal team onto the field and snap it in 1 second. Oh wait...

I think it should be 2 seconds. But why do you feel that way?
You can either spike the ball and end the game or you can run one more pass play. Your choice.

Two players may never have the same jersey number during a game, and if a player intends on playing multiple positions with different jersey numbers, he must inform the referee who will announce the change.

So in the situation like the LSU/Ole Miss game 2009 where a long pass is completed and there's under 3 seconds left, would the refs have just called it or would they give LSU a chance to have the kicking team out there (like they should have) and kick a field goal with time expiring after the snap? I'm confused on that. The way it reads, LSU would never have even gotten a shot to kick if they're saying you need 3 seconds to be able to spike it.

You're confusing spike the ball with snap the ball.
If there's 1 or 2 seconds left you can either snap and spike the ball and have the game end or snap and kick a field goal or throw the ball and have the game end.

The automatic ejection for leading with the helmet will hurt LSU bad one day. Probably in a game against Alabama.

Bama will win a game due to an opponent being ejected. It will happen.

They are the ones who probably wrote the rule. The entire system is rigged in Bama's favor.

Bama will win the LSU game due to LSU losing a very good player in a bad call situation.
