Not have Joffery go all crazy at the last second.

He thought if he confessed he would take the black.

Had that happened the war wouldn't of started as said by Tyrion numerous times in season 2 & 3.

Stannis would have still attacked

War with the Starks was the only thing maybe preventable by Joffery.

Who knows, maybe the Starks would have joined Stannis if Joffery didn't cut his head off.

Moreover, why didn't Ned opt for a trial by combat?
the outcome of a trial by combat is supposed to be determined by the gods. losing would reinforce his treason, right?

the treason he confessed to otherwise?

Yeah, I guess.

But it would have been an interesting trial with Jamie captured by Robb in the North.

The Lannisters probably would have gone with the Hound since the Mountain was off burning the countryside.

Who would have fought on Ned's side? Himself? Selmy may have stepped up for him.

Would have been some good television.

Doubt it. He knew he had to split town before Joffrey sent people after him.

Joffery fired him for being too old.

Selmy may have stepped up to defend the King's honor.

And Selmy responded with pulling his steel out and telling the entire king's guard he would cut through all of them to get to the king.

Joff sent men after him but he got out of the city in time.

No, he was the head of the King's guard, he wouldn't have defended someone accused of treason.

Ned wouldn't have stood a chance in a trial by combat, he was already injuried by Jamie and was being given poppy to dull the pain.

Not "would" but "could" and that's an important distinction. He then threw his sword at their feet in disgust before storming out of the room.

Ned couldnt have fought for himself anyway. His leg was fricked. Or was that only in the book?

I don't understand how he "could" while sitting in the Red Keep's dungeon. Maybe the TV show didn't explain it well enough, but Selmy barely escaped King's Landing with his life.

EDIT: Oops I see what you mean now. My point still stands though.

In the book I think he was stabbed with a sword, in the show they used a spear. So... "close enough for government work".

His horse fell on him. There was no fight with Jamie in the book.

ETA: Or he fell off his horse..one or the other.
