I ride on farm roads and canal levees. I can just drive normal. I dont have to go fast and bounce all over to avoid getting stuck.
I usually know when I am somewhere I should not be. That is when I remember that a 4x4 is only as good as the winch that is on it.

I use mine a good bit.I have a F250 diesel and it tends to spin the back tires in wet grass because their is so much weight up front.It has been worth its weight in gold on more than one occasion.If you stay on pavement 90% of the time you probably wont use it anyway. As far as maintenance on 4wd,I change the fluid in the transfer case and front differential every year or so.Thats about it.

I am constantly cussing my company truck for being 2wd. 4wd even comes in handy on wet concrete like at boat ramps or entering busy streets during a storm, not to mention jumping curbs and medians.

Quite a bit but I work in the mountains. Never needed it at the boat ramps or anything though. It's a nice feeling to have that ability in your back pocket.

I've used a couple times in mud hole roads, wet/muddy grass and didn't want my 2 wheel drive tearing up grass. I don't need it so much for boat ramps now cause i have more power w/ 250 but i sure as hell needed 4wd with my old 150.

I have had 4x4 since 1993. there is no substitute. with that said I hardly ever use it, but like everybody has said, you don't need it until you need it. I have even used the low range a few times just to go slow without having to pump my breaks and give it gas all the time. Parades, putting the top cap on an outfield fence, looking for things along the road, etc.
Any time you have to pull off the road in the winter time you take a chance of being stuck without 4 wheel drive. I have also pulled many a stuck person out too.

Same here. I've never got stuck (been real close) but there is s lot of places I won't go. It isn't so much a necessity for me, but it'd really help where I hunt and in plenty other situations.

I used mine a lot in North Carolina and out the ranch in South Texas. I have never used it since living in LA for the last 19 months. I can tell you not having it sucks balls.

Every time I get a chance.... which is probably 3 times a year... and even where I use it, I probably don't need it except on one hill I usually climb.
Like the first response says... I have it for when I need it for the most part. And in all honesty, whatever vehicle you choose should already be in your price range regardless of the options. So, it's not like selecting 4x4 package will break the bank.

I once had a pig trail disappear at the bottom of a steep ridge. Middle of BFE, no cell service, miles from the nearest paved road, turning around was impossible. Put it in 4 and came out in reverse. Got to take a break for about 30 minutes while the engine cooled down. Did not spend the night in the woods that night.

Where at in South Texas? My dad has a lease right next to the King Ranch down by Kingsville, Texas. We take my truck out there and hunt out of the truck bed and have to be in 4 high at all times with all the sand out there

I used to use mine on a daily basis. Half of my day during the week was off-road. Now, it is maybe 3-4 times a month. Hub was busted once and I tried pulling a trailer from around my house. At the moment I realized I was stuck in my own yard, the realization that I shouldn't ever have a 2wd came over me. Haven't ever had one, and won't ever get one.
You sound like a limited slip 2wd kind of guy. That'll get you up most boat ramps if you know how to pull out correctly

I agree with this, as long as it is still within what is a reasonable price range for you. As far as using the 4WD, I don't very often, but we have had ice/snow a few times and I liked having it then. Son got sick one night while it was sleeting and the roads were bad, so I used it to take him to the Dr. That being said, I could easily get by without it, but like having it. If I'm off the road, I'm usually am on a 4 wheeler, tractor, or walking.

And if you get a newer chevy or gmc 4x4, turn that traction control shite off when you put it in 4 wheel drive. That shite will get you stuck.
The first time I got into some mud with my gmc z71 I was not impressed.....until I took off the traction control. I come out of that hole so fast it almost made me run up into the woods.

Get 4 wheel drive. I had a 4x4 then got a new truck without, then moved to the northeast, and learned what 4 wheel drive is really made for; snow now every time I see a flake fall I regret not having a truck with 4 wheel drive.

I also learned that the hard way. fricking thing just hits the brakes when the wheels start spinning. I thought the sum bitch was broke one night. Thought about it the next morning and went through the same hole without getting stuck. A little brake action helps kick in that gov-lock also

They all work, you just have to hit the brakes on some of them unless you are turning. The GM gov-lock is the best one I have seen/experienced in my days of rooting

I have auburn limited slips in the front and back in my truck and it is absolutely awesome. Limited slip kicks all kinds of arse when it works like its supposed to.
