Hitchcock advice (his best films)

So the director thread got me thinking...I don't think I own any Hitchcock movies. Also haven't seen many of his films either. So if I were to buy some of his movies (not just to have, but to watch), where should I start?
Also, I mainly am talking about his classics or best movies...I don't need to see all of them (I can picture iwy listing about 40 ).
Just glancing at his filmography, and based on things I've seen on this board, I'm thinking these so far:
Rope
Dial M for Murder
Rear Window
Vertigo
The Birds (seen)
Psycho (seen)
North by Northwest
Added:
Notorious
Strangers on a Train
Shadow of a Doubt
What else?
And feel free to critique other peoples' suggestions...I'd like as many opinions as possible. I'm thinking that I may just acquire a solid collection and then pick a weekend to just chill at the house and watch them all.
Thanks.
ETA: Also, if color vs. black and white comes into play, recommend one.

That's probably THE best movies, but...
Notorious is sorely underrated, as in, it migh be his most complete film front to back.
Strangers on a Train is creepy and fun. Saboteurs, if you can get a copy, is quite awesome.
Also, THe 39 Steps and The Trouble With Harry are both worth a watch.

Strangers on a Train and Notorious. Strangers on a Train is actually my second favorite Hitchcock film after Vertigo. Hitchcock really earned his "Master of Suspense" nickname with that one.

Do you want his most financially successful films or his best films?

great list...i would add strangers on a train and rebecca.

With the mountain of folklore surrounding Psycho, you'd probably want to see it first.
Rebecca is one of my favorites. It's a great examination of his early style, and another incomprehensible example of his superhuman ability of being allowed to make movies that have appalling subject matter.
And just as a story, Rebecca is every man's worst nightmare - a woman who tells you, on your wedding night, that she's secretly a freaky slut who has no intention of changing her ways, that she intends to openly humiliate you and that her favorite frick is the incestuous affair she's been having with her brother. (no spoilers. you know this in the first 5 minutes)
How he was allowed to make this movie in 1940, I will never know.

I would start with Psycho and Vertigo and then move on to Strangers on a Train (apparently one of Reggie Miller's favorites as per recent thread), Notorious, Rebecca, Rear Window, North by Northwest.....just watch them all, you can't go wrong. Freaux said it, Stangers on a Train is alot of fun to watch. One word: carousel.

If you end up liking his work, I'd recommend Frenzy. One of his most underrated.

A lot of good films have been mentioned. One of my favorites is "Foreign Correspondent".

I enjoyed all you have listed. Trouble with Harry was fun. I also liked some of his later works Torn Curtain, Frenzy, and I thought Family Plot was fun.

You picked two good ones to start with. Psycho showed the most controversial death ever (obviously), and cleavage than any other mainstream movie ever had. Also was the first movie to show a toilet the way it did... Odd but it shows how he was groundbreaking even in little ways. The Birds was the first animal(s) attack movie like that, other than solo villians like Godzilla and King Kong.
Like my top 40 movie ballot showed, Dial M for Murder is my favorite movie of all time. It's his most underrated film IMO. It's also on Netflix Instant. So if you didn't want to buy it you could at least check it out. Also, it has Grace Kelly, who is super hot. There's only three of his movies on Instant I think.
Rear Window has Grade Kelly as the lead too so that makes me like it even more. Jimmy Stewart too. You can get a better quality DVD with it too.
Like mentioned, North by Northwest and Vertigo great too. Though I don't like Vertigo as much as most do.
Of the ones not on your list I'd say add The 39 Steps, Shadow of a Doubt and The Lady Vanishes. The 39 Steps is early 30's so it's a little cheesy, but it's a cool story and actually kind of funny. The main dude is pretty funny. Shadow of a Doubt is about a young girl who really looks up to her uncle and all excited about him coming to visit, but the papers are reporting about a killer on the loose, so it's about her trying to figure out if her uncle is the killer or not. The Lady Vanishes is just another one I highly recccommend.
I bought a DVD at Walmart that had ten of his older movies on it for like $8. It had The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes. Is say try something like that for his older stuff because they aren't for everybody. Edit: I should really start reading threads first.
Mad I'm late to the party

Amazingly, 3 of these were 'attempted' to be remade, and they are all monumental fails (IMO):
The Birds Oh good grief....
Psycho (insert two actors into the same background) Why ?????????? Vince Vaughn???
Rear Window (although it does have a modicum of suspense)

For anyone interested...
The Trouble With Harry comes one in 30 minutes (@ 8:30) on RETRO & RETROHD.
Octopussy comes on at the same time on EPIX & EPIXHD.

I scanned the thread and noticed one mention, but would add The 39 Steps to any list of Hitchcock movies. You have to get past 1935 cinematography, but you'll see the early signs that he could take great stories and tell them incredibly well.
