re: So you're telling me I should be excited about a tie?

End result was good, Mexico blew chances
US soccer still has a long way to go before European or south american teams even take notice
The years keep passing and we keep settling for draws where we parked the bus and claim victories
Yes I know this was only the 2nd point for US soccer in Mexico. I'm just ready for US soccer to start accomplishing things. We were teased with glory at the confederation cup in '09 but how long will it take for this to happen again...

I didn't mind claiming a victory last night considering 3 or 4 starters would have a difficult time making the team when everyone is healthy.

Does finishing higher in the standings have any effect on our draw for the World Cup or is it totally random?
In 2006, we won the hex and were ranked in the top 5 in the world ( ).
We ended up unseeded (while Mexico got seeded), and our world cup draw was Italy, Ghana and Czech Republic.
So really, the only goal is to qualify, because the best case scenario in the draw is that we don't take it in the shorts as hard as 2006.

There are only a handful of teams in the world that wouldn't do the same at azteca

We didn't really even stack up the box until the final 15.
We basically just said frick it, we're gonna try to just give them the ball and hold on for dear life
Definitely no bus parking, IMO til late.

Bc it was awesome for us. I've been watching us get our arse beat in Azteca my whole life. My favorite sports memory is probably watching us curb stomp Mexico 2-0 in the middle of the night in WC 2002. To people with those memories, this was awesome. To new "soccer is cool I play FIFA" fans, they have no frame of reference for what has been going on for decades, so they post about how ties are gay.

Nothing like that result either.

Seriously though. I mean a point is a good result obviously but I am a bit put off by these guys taking celebratory locker room pictures etc... over a tie. I understand our poor history in Mexico but still a scoreless draw where we were hanging on for dear life? Take the point and get out of town but have a little more pride.

Geez, you're like a nagging girlfriend who finds the smallest and most petty things to bitch about. your shtick is old

Yea, because I'm the only one who feels that way.
I won't apologize for wanting the USA to be more than a team who hopes to go on the road and eek out draws. The way some people are reacting, most notably some of the players, shows that they are perfectly fine with where we are as a soccer nation right now.

It is kind of a joke how USA is celebrating as a team.
But I am excited for the tie! Because of how pissed off them POS Mexicans are. I take joy in them being upset more than us getting a point.

High fives were had all around the Varsity after the final whistle.

Context is a wonderful thing, but we live in the Twitter Age, where anything popular that is happening right now must be commented on by everyone...regardless if they know what's going on or not.
If you know anything about this rivalry and the Azteca, you would know that this point was huge for the USMNT. But when people flip on SportsCenter and it's led with a scoreless draw, they don't know how to react...but they must.
Or Cosmo is all over TD and felt like trolling.

I was there too, good atmosphere

Finishing higher has no effect on the World Cup group draws....unless the US were somehow deemed to be a top 8 FIFA ranked/seeded team.

Probably. But my comments can be applied to a general audience, not just this Cosmo character.
