Advice on purchase of a new handgun

Long story short, I do curative work for the oil companies which require me to walk in the woods. Yesterday while walking on an old logging road I came across three pigs. One of the pigs charged and I haul arse into a deer stand. I waited for over 40 minutes for the pigs to leave. Im usually several yards from my truck when walking and barely have a cell signal. Any recommendations for a handgun in this situation? I talk to some friends and they say buy a 9 mm, 40, 44, 45, or a 357 so I pretty confuse. Never owned a handgun, have big hands If that matters, and budget is around 1000. Thanks for any help.

For self defense against pigs I suggest either a .357 or .44mag revolver.
.357 is on the light end of what I'd want for busting up pigs, but it'll be much easier to tote and shoot than a .44 mag
A .44 mag will kill the shite out of anything you can hit with it.

If you are new to guns, either get a rifle or shotgun for this situation.

If you decide on .357 get a longer barrel. 6-8 inches. More velocity better ballistics

Handguns only offer two advantages over a long gun.
1 concealment
2 able to fire with only one hand
concealment should not be an issue to you in a remote environment
I don't know what kind of work you do weather you always have to carry a load in your hands.
Rifles and shotguns are easier to hit targets with, and pack much more power than a handgun.

My default is a HK45, 45c or USP45.
However based on your use, I would probably go with a .357, probably a BlackHawk.
I carried one for many years for just that reason.

Did you yell at the pigs to identify yourself as a human? The reason why I ask is that is very rare for a pig to charge without some provocation. Usually the biggest, baddest hog will run if it knows it is dealing with a human. The times I have been run up a tree have usually involved having squirrel dogs getting a bunch of hogs riled up and then running straight back at me with the herd of hogs in tow.
In any event, if you have no handgun experience and if you don't do a lot of shooting of any kind, you are much better off retreating than trying to stand your ground against charging hogs. The chance of you getting a instant kill shot are very remote and you are just allowing them to get closer to you, eliminating the possibility of a safe retreat.

.357 Revolver!
Of all of the calibers that you listed it is the caliber that has the highest amount of energy.
Use FMJ rounds. A pig, or bear for that matter, has a very hard skull. If you were to hit it in the head, hollow point rounds have been known not to penetrate. Because you probably do not have to worry about shoot through (shooting through your target and hitting something behind it) in this situation, you will be fine with FMJ.
Use a revolver because you obviously don't have much experience with a handgun. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but a revolver is more reliable than a semi-auto. (I know that some of you haters out there are gonna pounce on this statement, but unless he is going to go to the range and do clearing drills...my statement holds true).

Interesting question. First, decide which platform you want to use, revolver vs semi auto, based on actually handling and shooting a few guns. After that, I'd suggest one of the following:
Semi auto: #1, Glock in 10 mm Auto or #2, Glock in 357 Sig
Revolver: #1, 5-6 1/2# revolver 44 Mag or #2, 5-6 1/2" revolver in 357 Mag. I'd be more inclined to us a double action over a single action, but would consider both depending on availability and what you can best shoot.
W/ the 357 Mag and 44 Mag, you can use milder 38 Spec and 44 Spec loads for practice.
Hogs can be BIG and VERY thick animals. Although I like the 45 ACP as a self defense gun, I'm concerned it may not penetrate sufficiently on bigger hogs. This is one of the situations where, as long as you can handle the gun, too much gun would be better than too little gun....W/ a revolver, carry a full power load that uses a long, flat nose bullet (may also see it referred to as a wide meplat) that will penetrate deep while providing a good wound; FMJ and RN bullets will penetrate deep, but not cause as much damage. Here's a good example of an LFN load.LINK

Didn't read the thread. Did someone suggest the Taurus Judge?
Ignore that person.

I would advise getting a semi auto .45. Does some real damage to anything it hits. And if a big pack of hogs roll up on you, you won't be stuck with 5 or six bullets with a wheel gun.
