Swarbrick and my brother commenting on this story: we old guys who grew up before the internet know not to trust it and would never let something like this happen to us. Only socially retarded young kids could get catfished.

Wikitiger: That's why I am always skeptical of borderline mythological stories like Teo and don't believe he could have been catfished this long. We young kids are skeptical of everything because trolling/scams are a daily part of our lives and we use things like facetime and skype to verify.

The more I think about this angle, the more I get pissed off.

Thamel wanted the heartwarming story about Te'o so he didn't pry. He wanted to admonish Mathieu so he tried for weeks to dig shite up and got a club poster.

It's like these guys have their narrative already decided BEFORE they even begin getting the information for the story.

It's fricking pathetic.

calling Te'o out on his bullshite lies

Please tell me that Skip Bayless is taking the opposing viewpoint.

I hate that show because SB has to play devil's advocate 95% of the time.

He was on point yesterday. Is he still being the voice of reason on Te'o's involvement?

Well, you know what created the media? Technology. Goddamned technology.

FWIW, I'm just being a smart arse. It's apparently going to take a couple of pages of the thread, so I might as well participate somewhat

yeah we are a more cynical society now because we're immersed in so much more information

i see this as a good thing, but i'm cynical by nature so i'm biased

Besides not checking out the inconsistencies, Thamel did a shitty job by not trying to contact fake dead girl's family. If you're doing a human interest story on a dead girlfriend, shouldn't you try to interview her family to ask what impact Te'o had on her fight against her fake disease? To see how her fake family was coping?

The only troll I hate worse than Skip is Rome.

They both take trolling sports fans to the proffesional level.

20 years ago, you think an above average linebacker could have been runner up to the Heisman because of a story about his girlfriend dying? Does that make us more or less "cynical" as a society?

I don't think "society" has really changed much. I think the way things are perceived has in some ways, though. I'm not sure that has anything much to do with technology.

I don't think that means we're more "cynical."

At least Rome tries to be edgy to rile people up

Skip just takes the most asinine positions and trolls people by being intentionally stupid

See, this is the most damning item with regards to the media.

You mean to tell me NOBODY wanted to interview the family of the girl that has been the inspiration for the "greatest LB in ND history" and his Heisman-esque season?

Somebody was just lazy when they hit a few dead ends.

Teo shut it down with Wojciehowski by saying the family wanted to remain as private as possible. Too lazy to read Thamel's notes - not sure if Teo played that card there. Either way, it's ridiculous that he volunteered this fairytale, then said the family wanted privacy. That should have been red flag number one.

Some Skip quotes (had to rewind the DVR):

"I am leaning toward believing him, nothing I heard yesterday unconvinced me of my position."

"I still believe there's a way he could've been roped in and deceived month after month because he has stunted emotional growth...a late bloomer on romantic relationships. He was vulnerable."

"Other people in her circle that communicated with Manti...he could've heard about the hospital, the funeral, all those details. He could've been told those by other people and he just relayed them."

"I don't have a problem with him being in love with someone he never met. Happens all the time. You can't put yourself in his shoes because he's not you. You're not him."
