I can always count on you to minimize the negative effects of social media while making all of the positives sound like life couldn't have happened without them.

What did people who wanted to make friends do before the internet? God only knows.

What's funny is that Pete Thamel, the dude who published the original cover story in SI back in October, SAW red flags but chose to ignore him. He found no record of the car crash and no record of her ever being at Stanford. Instead of following up with Te'o on these issues, he simply brushed them aside.

All of this goes back to him.

And this is the same guy that stalked TM7's familiy to get a story.

it's not really minimizing as much as i'm trying to eliminate the mental distancing of social media and real life

people like to segregate them, but they're not THAT different. people are just scared of various stigmas or technology and create a mythos surrounding it accordingly.

interacting with people is interacting with people

some people use that in negative ways for their own gains, regardless of the medium. shite happens. we're humans

I'm not a memorabilia collector of anything, not even my own stuff that I've been in magazines and newspapers for. However, that Lannay game ball is something I'd put on a mothafrickin' mantle.

I want that game ball!!!!!!!

Te'o probably did get catfished. These football players and athletes are not the brightest people.

But I believe he did know at some point and kept on lying. He just needs to come out and say he found out at some point and felt too embarrassed to tell anyone.

Then he needs to say the story just got away from him. He didn't want to disappoint his family, friends, fans, and ND. So, he kept the story going.

Then he needs to apologize and say he wants to get past this and get on with focusing on football.

I feel that's the story too.

I think he could save some face too if he went with this. No one is going to believe he was duped this entire time. He just needs to tell the truth and people will forgive him and he can move on with his football career.

interesting read you linked, this guys response seems fairly normal in a situation like that. Makes me lean even further towards Teo being involved

The more I think about this angle, the more I get pissed off.

Thamel wanted the heartwarming story about Te'o so he didn't pry. He wanted to admonish Mathieu so he tried for weeks to dig shite up and got a club poster.

I'm not in the same camp as the guy that said society is fricked up more now. Society is better off now.

...but I think it is disingenuous to say that technology has made it harder to pull off this type of con.

that's more of an issue with our society clamoring for human interest stories. the media is willing to give us what we want

sensationalism in the media isn't anything new. this story turned out to be fake, but it's not the first over-dramatized scenario that stretched the truth. it's just the latest one, and accordingly, it's the worst one ever
