See, this is the most damning item with regards to the media.

You mean to tell me NOBODY wanted to interview the family of the girl that has been the inspiration for the "greatest LB in ND history" and his Heisman-esque season?

Somebody was just lazy when they hit a few dead ends.

Yep. You always see these human interest stories. It wasn't anything new.

BUT......

In these stories they almost always talk to the family. They ask about how the athlete was impacting a specific person (in this case it woudl be the daughter). They'd have shot of the girl's gave site to tug on those heart strings. They'd talk to the girls sister about how great Manti was and how he was the reason for her sister getting up every day while battling cancer.

Just typical shite you'd see in the piece like this.

I understand Manti probably played it off her family wanted privacy, but a journalist should get contact to at least say he did and they'd have a voice over saying so.

It wasn't laziness, it was the media trying to promote a human interest story that they found just too good to pass up. Te'o announces to the world his girlfriend and grandmother had both died on the same day and then he proceeds to have the two best games of his career. The sports media was just frothing at the mouth to get the scoop on this because of their incessant desire to humanize these student-athletes, to make them relatable, to turn them into larger than life heroes.

That's why I agree with what Rush Limbaugh said yesterday on his radio show: sports journalists aren't real journalists. A political reporter for the New York Times would have smelled this bullshite a mile away.

Teo shut it down with Wojciehowski by saying the family wanted to remain as private as possible. Too lazy to read Thamel's notes - not sure if Teo played that card there. Either way, it's ridiculous that he volunteered this fairytale, then said the family wanted privacy. That should have been red flag number one.

There are ways to verify it without contacting the family. The Stanford Registrar should have been step one.

Pete Thamel checked with Stanford and found no record of her ever having been there. Instead of talking to Te'o about it, he ignored it.

Wouldn't it have been nice if the same media had 5% of this type of curiosity about Barack Obama?

The fact that no real journalist had the balls to do what Deadspin did here, seems to be what is most telling.

This is true. I worked with them for years. They're too busy stuffing their face with chili dogs in the press box and sniffing jocks.

I would like to hear Jeff Ireland's vetting of Manti. If he asked about Dez's mom being a prostitute, I wonder what questions he will have for Manti.

Deadspin is pretty much the greatest entity in sports journalism. PFT was on par until they came under the NBC umbrella

Not much, but the South Bend reporter stands by his story that Te'o's dad lied point-blank

quote:

Relying on information provided by Te'o's family members, the South Bend Tribune reported in October that Te'o and Kekua first met, in person, in 2009, and that the two also had gotten together in Hawaii, where Te'o grew up.

South Bend Tribune sportswriter Eric Hansen told WSBT-TV Friday that he still has the recording of the interview with Te'o's father Brian and mother Ottilia and listened to it again to make sure he didn't misquote the father.

"They met at Stanford his freshman year, they shook hands," Hansen said, according to WSBT-TV, of what Brian Te'o said. "This was an in-person meeting and there were subsequent meetings in Hawaii when Manti would go home. Again from listening to the tape I don't think Brian ever saw her or met her."

Hansen has been rattled by the experience and wants to know the truth.

"That's again what I'm trying to get to the bottom of -- what's real here and what's not? Is Manti a victim? Is somebody else a victim? Do I need to do my job differently when I've had multiple sources I trust confirm things? Do I need to go get a picture of a corpse?" Hansen said, according to WSBT-TV.
