It's one thing if the manager or owner comps you food or drink, in which case I always leave a hefty tip, but if you think that the bartender was merely "taking care of you" by using someone else's money, you're delusional.

They're not trying to steal from the restaurant or expecting you to tip them the cost of the drinks. They're just trying to hook you up. 40% is fair.
Most are just glad to have someone they know to talk too.

Maybe they don't realize that's what it is, but that's what they're doing.
I should say, though, I am guilty of taking plenty of free food from a restaurant a couple of friends work at.. employees get free soups and salads and I've gotten that hookup a few times.

They are stealing, and obviously very good at it. That's why I asked which restaurant, to make sure it's not mine!!

Why not just leave a usual good tip as if you were charged for the drinks?
If you do know someone very well, it's gotta be kind of an odd position to be in.

It is very odd and awkward. Hence my reasoning for starting the thread.

my credit card statement says its not yours. Unless I'm the one overcharged to allow for Fred and his bride to skate.

how many drinks did he serve you and what was it?
i mean you were at a restaurant, you couldnt have had that many huh?
a lot of managers encourage taking care of customers on occasion. I dont think what the bartender did is totally taboo, unless you sat at the bar and just got tore down.
a few drinks within the time of the dinner? meh
Btw your friend could have very well even paid for your drinks, or some of them.

He charged us for our first round, then comped us two glasses of wine and one scotch.

I have a couple friends who are bartenders. and they usually hook me up pretty well. So I give them a pretty nice tip

If you own a restaurant, fine, if not, stop with this high and mighty/holier than thou bullshite. next time someone offers a freebie say, "no thanks...I am perfect and you should be reported"

Dear douchebag do you make a payroll every Friday? I do. Stealing is stealing no matter what you think. Apparently you have no clue what it takes Mr. Obama.

I had several friends who were bartendefs back ib the day and I never expected free drinks. 4th beer free after a $1.25 tip on each beer or heavy pour us mostly what I got..... but never free drinks.
Martini I have to agree with you that basically the guy is stealing.

100% agree. It's no different than him taking $20 bucks cash out of the register. Embarrassing. No managers/owners encourage their employees to do this.

It is amazing how this can change your outlook on this question. Been there, sweated payroll, I know the feeling.
I own a service company, one of the guys was giving away company services if there was a hot looking skirt involved. It amazed him when I got upset.
Most bars in a college town are supported by young thirsty people without much cash. Most service people are young and have thirsty friends, they like making themselves popular with the owners booze.
If I owned a bar I would watch them very closely and talk a lot about the evils of comping your friends.

I usually tip near the amount that the full meal would have cost. If I was going there not planning on getting free drinks then I can handle paying near what I expected to pay

This is our first time to ever take advantage of this situation, and we will not be doing it regularly. I am interested to see the different responses to this.
Why not? I do this purposely. I have friends at several bars and restaurants, and always get shite comped and I always tip accordingly.
Eta: not stealing in my case
At my regular bar, the employees get a 50% discount every time they work so instead of drinking, they'll give us their discount for the night. Almost always a high up manager
As for my friend at a restaurant here in town, he buys it for us. Pays for it himself since he gets a big discount

Yup.
My buddy is the owner of Field of Dreams in Broussard and I've never paid for jack shite over there, but I always tip Josh (the bartender) the total value of what I think everything was worth
