They will definitely eat cheap scopes because of the vibration.
I've never had a problem with a decent scope on them though. A decent scope and some good mounts should be just fine.

Another finicky thing about spring piston guns is they cannot EVER be dry-fired. Just one time can ruin the gun.
CO2 and pneumatic guns are fine to dry-fire.

First off, you're a sissy if you can't cock a 46lbs pull on a high end, break barrel air rifle, I weigh 160lbs and cock it easily. I own a weihrauch hw90 which has an excellent trigger. The hw90 is a beeman r2 with the same gas ram, just cheaper price because of the stock, but I love mine. The gas ram is unlike the spring rams, you can cock it and l eave it set for hrs. Unlike a spring which will take a set over time. I use mine everyday, so that is why I went with a higher end model. I put a medium recoil scope and went to town. Well over 3,000 rounds in two yrs without even cleaning it and it is still kicking. Straightshooters.com has excellent customer service, but their prices are usually higher.
I love air rifles.

You have some fine guns. I have a Beeman P3 single stroke pneumatic pistol rated at 400 fps that has a great factory trigger. I must admit though, my favorite play gun is a $40 Daisy BB gun similar to the Red Ryder. I wish someone would make a good German or British quality BB gun with a large magazine and lever action.

I'm gonna slightly hijack this and ask which one of you boys has an opinion on which pellet rifle is the quietest? My wife frowns on the neighbors hearing me shoot their pets.

To be quiet, the projectile needs to be below the speed of sound (1126 feet per second). When any object of any size breaks the sound barrier, there is a noticeable sonic boom.
any .22 caliber pellet gun currently made has a subsonic muzzle velocity. not true with .177 caliber.

The best general purpose backyard gun is the $180 Benjamin pneumatic pump that has been in production for about 50 years. It is the Ruger 10/22 of pellet guns. Idiot proof, cheap, reasonably well made, variable power and durable.

/\ ...for everyday plinking......agreed.

I agree. All of the other fancy rigs mentioned in this thread are unnecessary. The Benjamin will kick arse.

I just checked out the Gamo rifles on YouTube and I have GOT to get one. I need something quiet that I can shoot in my backyard.

I can't make myself do all that pumping when I can just get a crack vlbarrel.
I know Benjamins are great guns, I just dont like all the pumping. They probably do last longer though.

I just don't enjoy shooting the crack barrels.

If you fap left handed and pump your Benjamin right handed you'll no longer have to switch-fap to avoid one arm becoming larger that the other.

When I was a wee lad, all us delinquents had either Benjamins or Sheradins. The Benjamins were all blued in .177 and .22 calibers and the Sheradins all came stainless in .20 caliber. We Benjamin owners envied the exotic Sheradin owners. Nonetheless, no squirrel, bird or streetlight had safe haven in that neighborhood. Even my little sister felt the sting of my early sniper training.

Agreed. I have gone through several of them in my lifetime. I actually wore the gaskets out of 2, and had another trigger break. I sent them all back to Crossman (who now owns Benjamin/Sheridan) and they fixed two of them and sent me one brand new one for less than $40 each. I just want something quieter, nearly silent.

I own a Gammo Whisper and would not buy it again. I had a Beeman before that which I preferred, however it broke very quickly. After the Beeman broke (cocking mechanism) I went w/ the Gammo. It sounds cheap when you shoot it. There is a site w/ videos on how to shoot a crack barrel. Believe me, technique is everything when you shoot one. These same sites have reviews on just about every one of them made.
The newer ones are Nitro pistons and I'm told they are much better than the springers. The springers are the ones that need scopes made for them. Put a regular scope on a springer and it will not last very long at all.
As to power, the Gammo is stout. W/ regular pellets, the claim is 1000fps. Shooting into plywood at 30 ft makes me believe this claim. I bought this gun while living in N Texas and had a major squirrel problem. Between my neighbor and I, we killed 186 of them.
Here is a link to several videos. LINK
