So we can only hold an opinion on something if it impacts our life? Granted, I agree that there's no reason to be angry over his lack of proper English, being of the mindset to only discuss situations that impact your life would limit us to very little talk at all.
Dude was acting like he was truly upset at this, as if Ichiro's lack of English proficiency was something major.
And make no mistake, there is the element of the people who are mad that they have to "Press 1" when they call a toll free number to this...

Its so he make snide remarks about Americans for the japanese media and then his translator can make up some bullshite
Reporter: How do you like playing in NY?
Ichiro: This city is full of homeless people and dishonorable scum. Japan will rise again and destroy america!
Translator: I love it here. mmmmmmmmmm pizza.

He does speak it. Just not in public settings.

A LOCK IMO.
Agreed. Easy. Would of been fun if he played his whole career in MLB. Would be talking about him approaching 4,000 hits soon.

I'll see if I can find the link for it but he used to give a speech every year before the All-Star game to get the AL fired up. It was in English and FULL of profanity, but was supposedly hilarious.
Edit: was easier to find than I thought, here's a link where Yahoo did a report on it.

You have nothing to complain about. You are some little bitch on an internet message board and Ichiro is a former AL MVP. Frick off.

Excellent point, the whole "how exactly does this impact you" cop-out could be used on probably 100% of the threads on the sports boards

I was given the best sportmanship award in little league for not being a crying pussy after striking out or losing. Can Ichiro beat that?

Ichiro gets off on 57 Chevy and screamin' guitar...

People don't realize how unimaginably hard it is to learn a completely different language (like english to japanese or vice versa) from scratch as an adult.

The French had the same complaint about Lance Armstrong, whose French was described by Phil Liggett as impeccable when he chose to speak it.

I'm sick of seeing this guy use a translator to speak for him. He's been playing baseball in the U.S. for almost 30% of his life. I just think it's pathetic. He must have lived a very isolated life in Seattle since only 1% of the population is Japanese.
What an ignorant post. Why do you care whether he speaks English or not? It is incredibly hard to learn any language as an adult and English is not one of the easier ones.

I am always amazed at guys who can barely speak the language of the countries they live in (I know you can't read this, Carlos Tevez), but I get the feeling that Ichiro's English is excellent. He just hates giving interviews and being followed around, so he does this to keep a lower profile.
From the HBO clip, it's clear that he his a pretty solid accent, especially by Japanese standards. And most of the athletes playing in the US have great accents, far better than most of their countrymen who have PhDs and teach in American universities.
Dirk, Pau Gasol (I'm not counting Marc since he went to high school here for a few years), even some of the guys who played college ball here and went back to Europe. THey all speak great English.
I think that some of the Dominican players are the rare exception here.

And mad props to Rembert Browne at Grantland for discovering these Japanese TV clips of Ichiro in the US in 1995.
I just watched him at Universal Studios
