Could in the prime Mike Tyson be unified world champ today?

Could a 18 year old mike tyson rise through the ranks and be world champ like he did during the 80's? Would a Kevin Rooney/Cus D'Amato trained Mike Tyson defeat the Klitschko brothers? I do not think he could make up the height difference, but he was so fast in his prime with great movement so maybe he could handle them.

That was not a prime Mike tyson in the douglas fight. He had a bunch of bums in his corner, with Don King running the show. Primetime Mike was when he was with Rooney managing his career after Cus passed away.

mike had to chose between being the best in the world at something and some remote sense of sanity.
angry, hungry, crazy mike could knock any mother fricker out in this world.

It would be like Rocky III meets Rocky IV... without Rocky. Clubber Lang v. Ivan "The Machine" Drago
Personally, I think Drago takes it. Clubber would still have a punchers chance, no doubt, but Drago was the superior boxer.

I think Vitali would probable take Tyson in to deep waters and stop him late. Wladimir on the other hand has shown he can be overwhelmed with pressure its just a matter of what kind of ref their is.

FWIW I think the Klitschkos would dominate Tyson in his prime.

You really think Wladimir Klitschko would dominate Tyson in his prime? The same Wlad who got TKO'd by journeyman bum Ross Purity and got KTFO by Corrie fricking Sanders. Really? Vitali might cause Tyson problems but prime Tyson would annihilate Wlad. The younger Klitschko would be lucky to make it out of the second round.

Honestly, those guys are just horrible matchups for Tyson. He'd throw a tantrum after just a couple of rounds of frustration.

That was before he began training with Manny Steward. The Wlad of today overwhelms guys by tying up and pushing them back against the ropes if a ref allows that Tyson will be weak by the second half of the fight.

Yup. frickin Steward ruined the HW division forever with that shite.

In terms of managers Rooney/D'Amato>Steward

From everything I've read...Tyson in his terrifying prime wasn't about/concerned with matchups. Listening to Teddy Atlas...Tyson was "your prototypical schoolyard-built bully, and he depended on intimidating opponents" in order to whip them...as a result, he beat most of his opponents before they ever stepped into ring...fear and intimidation were his best punches.
If Tyson couldn't intimidate either of those guys...what a bully relies on - he would get frustrated and quit ala Holyfield (deliberately disqualifying himself.)
If the Russians met Tyson in the 80's and bought into the persona...there's no reason to think they'd face the same result. It wasn't until Tyson became human that his matches became about skill vs. skill and matchups...Holyfield/Lennox Lewis.

if human = drugs, partying, and never training, then yeah I agree.

It's easy to say...skill/training left him...ergo he lost.
I think the aura of invincibility hurt him just as much...once that was shot by Douglas and then Holyfield...he lost his greatest punch. Size and skill-wise weren't on his side...even if he was at his peak training. The fear factor with Tyson was huge.
ETA: I remember reading the Sports Illustrated article on Spinks before their fight - you could tell in Spinks' words, he had lost the fight before he even stepped into the ring. The man was terrified.

While I believe Tyson has been seriously over rated, especially during his prime(fought mediocre comp), I think it's very likely he could beat both. I haven't followed boxing much since 2002, but my impression remains that European fighters are heartless and fold under pressure. See Golota and some of the Klitchko's performances.

He lost the skill/training before the douglas fight when he fired rooney and everyone that protected him. When Don King showed up skill/training went out the window and showtime showed up. Watch the Rooney trained fights and then watch the douglas fight, it is a noticeable difference.

He would CRUSH them BOTH.

If it even went two rounds. Tyson was pound for pound the BEST I have ever seen in his prime. He won most of his bouts BEFORE he even hit the ring. He was a machine when focused proper.
