That proposal has apparently been modified to included salary rollbacks over a period of time.
Wow. The soft cap is at 58 mill right now. As I figured, they are playing some hardball.

NBA Lockout will make the NFL look like a half-day. This is going to be longer and uglier that Popeye Jones.

If they have a hard cap remotely close to this low, they're going to need to bring back the "Allan Houston Rule" to dump some of the more worthless big-money guys, like Gilbert Arenas, without cap implications.

probably so
they are actually losing money at a lot of franchises from the sound of things... the NFL owners are mostly squawking over margins

I think NBA players will settle so fast it will make heads spin. These guys live week to week for some reason. The last strike they missed a couple of checks and folded like cheap tents. I think we will see the same thing again.

NBA needs to lock out so badly

I think the NBA and the players both get that the numbers are out of line. Doesn't mean they will both concede anything but I actually think they have a better shot at getting something done than the NFL

I rarely have sympathy for the owners, but the NBA owners aren't crying wolf here. They need to change the finacial structure of the game. Reminds me a lot of hockey in the early aughts.

Then again, the GMS being idiots forced them into this situation.

And who hired those GMs. The owners need to restructure the league, but I don't feel sorry for them. The players just took what they could get. The owners should have put a stop to it a long time ago.

There is currently one team in the NBA with a salary under $52M.
I don't see how it will work when teams like the Lakers, Heat, Bulls, etc already have over $45M locked up in contracts for the next few years already.
Teams stuck with contacts like Rashard Lewis and Emeka Okafor will be fricked.

as I understand it one proposal was for all salaries to be decreased by some substantial percentage... bringing at least a good number of teams under the new cap
But it sounds like it might be phased in instead now. I don't think it is clear how it will play out

Both sides really folded that year when it was a half season. I still think the owners could have held out longer and crushed them.
The NFL lockout could have a profound impact on the NBA one (ie Court rulings).
The NBA owners NEED to crush the players this time. The guaranteed contracts, high salaries and inability to keep competitive balance are destroying the league and especially smaller markets. Something needs to change.

which a source said still included the $45 million hard cap but added a phase-in of the cap over a few years

There is talk of voiding all contracts during the lockout and starting over
Which is part of the rumor behind the Joe Johnson deal. Supposedly ATL was banking on Johnson's deal being voided

Why on Earth would the players agree to that?
WOW

To move the proposed hard cap number up to the current soft cap number
This is going to be a long negotiation
We are talking about two different things here: if the owners insist on the hard cap right off the bat then a counter is void contracts and start over with a higher hard cap
If the hard cap is phased in then existing contracts remain and new deals are done with the new rules in mind

Kobe currently makes more than half of their proposed hard cap with his salary continuing to go up.

For the players to retaliate with much more here, they'll be literally asking for money that doesn't exist.
But...
Why does a large, structured deal need to be put in place for this to be solved? If a series of teams can't afford to pay a series of players their asking prices, then they don't sign. If these players can't find anyone to pay the asking price, they either don't play or they lower their asking price. This is precisely why Latrell Sprewell and Barry Bonds "retired" in their respective manners.
