VT gets pretty shitty ratings in national/BCS games
That is why I would like Miami...
I agree with this too. Miami may have low attendance numbers but they have a lot of TV fans.

VT/TAMU, regional programs with almost no national following
both are 2nd tier nationally followed programs, imo.
I agree with that to some extent - but the impressive thing about A&M for how much they have sucked - is how much money they still generate
And it is striking that Va Tech struggles to generate enough interest to sell out a BCS game - Texans are many things but they rarely suffer from a lack of interest in football

frick having Mizzou in the SEC. I don't care about TV, that's just watering our shite down.

but we have to ensure we have MAJOR increases in the ESPN/CBS deals before making any expansion talk or we risk fricking ourselves
Slive and the AD's are not idiots, and are certainly not charitable enough to split the pie without making a bigger pie. I would be really surprised if CBS and ESPN are not heavily involved in the SEC talks, including helping to determine which teams are offered. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if ESPN approached Slive, rather than the other way around.
FSU and Oklahoma are national teams, while A&M and Va. Tech bring big markets. If we are to expand, these are great choices. I have other personal favorites, but I see no problem with these 4. Besides, with Okie and A&M, we would get a big share of the Texas markets without having to deal with Texas' shite.

That's because UVA and VT have an intense university rivalry. Think about how LSU and Tulane bad mouth each other and then multiple that by 100.
Take anything you hear from members of these schools about the other with a grain of salt.
All you have to go is look at some of the department rankings put out every year. VT is no academic slouch.

This. If this is purely about money, which is the obvious situation, then anything about "regional appeal," "tradition" or "rivalry" is probably out the window.
I can see the SEC going to ESPN and saying, "Ok, so look at your ratings, Who do you think we should add?" *wink*

i think VT tumbles to a mediocre program if they come here. TAMU is already that
i don't want the SEC expanding unless we get an elite team
i don't care how many teams we have. we put out the best product. don't water that shite down

We may need to water it down a little. Adding the 4 teams mentioned in this thread is gonna make the SEC harder to win than a national championship is currently.
People may think aTm is down, but watch their recruiting soar when they hit the SEC.

Right now the SEC does. Was that true 10 years ago? 20 years? Will it be true 10 years from now?

and like Baloo said, its really not about national appeal anyway.
across the broad spectrum of college athletics, there are only a few teams that can even boast being "nationally" followed. And im talking counting on one hand.
as down as A&M has been in football, they have spit out quality teams in other sports

Bigger conferences means bigger markets and bigger TV contracts = more money to split. More money to split means more money to spend on facilities to attract recruits. The stay the same conference mentality is like those fans who don't understand the need for ticket price surcharges

recruits in TX will be able to choose to play in the Pac 16 or SEC (withoug having to leave state) and that theoretically could help TAMU recruiting. Recruits would have a choice, without having to go out of state. I guess that could hurt LSU recruiting in TX, but only if TAMU ends up being a consistent winner.

quote:Why? We already have boatloads of elite teams. Football is a zero sum game, only one team can win the SEC title. If you bring in all of these elite teams, what happens is that their brand gets tarnished as everyone fails to dominate. The SEC had the most successful expansion of any conference, and they did it by bringing in Arkansas and South Carolina. I'd like to bring in better programs like than that, but aiming at the "elite" has a cost that people aren't considering and they are ignorng what worked in the past.
